Friday, 3:15 p.m. Updates with information from OIA. Friday, 4:30 pm Updates with a return call from Maryknoll. Moments after a convincing 75-59 win at Kaimuki — not that observers and fans needed any convincing — Kahuku coach Alan Akina reflected on his team’s progress. It’s been roughly four weeks since his young team was buoyed by the arrival of three transfers from New Zealand. They came to Kahuku just as the regular season was about to begin. Since then, […]

By Jerry Campany on January 29, 2015

Daniel Matsumoto, who spent the last 15 years as Waianae’s head football coach, is retiring according to athletic director Glenn Tokunaga. Matsumoto went 92-70 in 15 seasons with the Seariders and guided them to a state final in 2010, losing 36-13 to a Marcus Mariota-led Saint Louis team. ILH boys soccer in free-for-all race

By Nick Abramo on January 29, 2015

The ILH boys soccer race looks like it’s going right down to the wire. In Division I, ‘Iolani (7-1-1) is in the driver’s seat, followed by Punahou (6-2-2) and Kamehameha (6-3-1). The three teams are fighting for two D-I state-tournament berths. Mid-Pacific (7-1-1) has clinched the Division II title and a D-II state spot, and the Owls have also made their presence felt in the upper echelon of the league with wins over ‘Iolani and Kamehameha and a tie against […]

Refs, recruiter color Bartenstein’s day

By Nick Abramo on January 29, 2015

For the most part, high school athletes are readily accessible for an interview immediately after a contest. Wednesday was just a bit different. The villain, so to speak, of the 1-1 ‘Iolani vs. Punahou soccer draw was already in discussion with somebody else. Zach Kingsley, the Chaminade University coach, was in the process of getting to know the Raiders’ Ronnie Bartenstein as a potential recruit. When that conversation was over and the media swooped in, Bartenstein, a solid center fullback, […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 29, 2015

The ILH Division I boys basketball standings got tighter at the top while taking on a more stratified look over the last two nights. A night after Punahou was handed its first loss of the regular season, ‘Iolani closed the gap on the Buffanblu with a 49-43 win over Saint Louis on Wednesday while creating separation for second place. The win moved the Raiders (5-2) one game behind Punahou with three games to play, including a meeting with the Buffanblu […]

UPDATE: PEARL CITY BEAT AIEA 3-1 TO RUN ITS STREAK OF STATE TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES TO 31. Maryknoll turned frustration into motivation

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 27, 2015

In a sense, Maryknoll basketball coach Kelly Grant was encouraged by the frustration simmering in the Spartans locker room after a series of close losses early in the ILH season. “They didn’t like losing,” Grant said, “and that was nice. “Going in the locker room, there were a lot of sour faces. … If we lose, our guys are upset and I like guys with passion.” After dropping four of their first five games of the regular season by a […]
