Spring Sports Coaches Poll: Optimism for most outdoor sports, doubt about football

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2020

Confidence in high school sports is fairly high for air riflery, Cross country, baseball, esports, golf, softball, tennis and track and field — despite the ongoing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hawaii Prep World polled dozens of coaches in spring and postponed fall sports. Twenty-two of them responded over the weekend — before the ILH made an announcement about cancellation of five winter sports. Coaches from the OIA, ILH, MIL and BIIF participated in the voting. Postponed fall sports […]

Saint Louis coach Dan Hale: Teams exploring ‘bubble’ scenario

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2020

Basketball teams in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu are already making secondary plans now that the league has cancelled hoops this season. With the league no longer directly responsible for basketball this winter — the ILH announced cancellation of five winter sports on Monday — programs could “bubble” together and schedule home-and-away games to make up for the lack of an official basketball campaign. It would be somewhat similar to the way teams schedule preseason games with each other, with […]

Chico Furtado: Maryknoll hoopsters will keep working out

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2020

In the three-plus decades Chico Furtado has coached basketball, nothing has brought him to conflicting emotions like the COVID-19 pandemic. The announcement by the ILH on Monday that its girls basketball season is being cancelled became one of the lowest points of 2020 for Furtado. Less than a week ago, he attended the funeral of a friend who he coached with years ago. Cause of death: coronavirus. “He’s younger than I am and it took his life. I know first […]

By Paul Honda on December 28, 2020

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu has sent out a letter announcing that basketball, bowling, paddling, soccer and wrestling have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league’s letter, dated Dec. 28, 2020, also notes that air riflery, a modified version of competitive cheer (dance routines only), cross country, swimming and diving, and tennis will be played. “Fall sports were moved to a later date with the hopes that progress in the fight against the pandemic would provide that opportunity. […]

A boy and his ball: Hard work earns respect from former Clemson player

By Paul Honda on December 25, 2020

On an empty football field, or a quiet basketball court, a 10-year-old boy grinds through each drill with complete focus. The ladder footwork. The drop back. The spirals. His father watches quietly, occasionally directing him to the next obstacle. On the asphalt court, the cones are set. The son weaves through them. The ballhandling has improved, day after day, week after week. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, they make the time. Jared Manti Dudoit has learned […]

Breaking the ice: Jarrin Kalama’s long journey yields offer from BYU

By Paul Honda on December 25, 2020

The day Jarrin Kalama boarded a plane and headed to the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, all there was to hold on to was hope. More than hope. Waiting for him was an uncle. Auntie. Cousins. All bunched together in a house, in a town called Heber City. It is 21 degrees there right now. Back in July, however, Kalama was on that plane, a Mililani junior transferring to Wasatch High School. New town. New friends. New culture. New teammates. New […]

Life after Kahuku: Tolu Smith thriving at Mississippi State

By Paul Honda on December 24, 2020

There was a time when Tolu Smith dreamed of donning the white and green of the University of Hawaii. Fate steered the 6-foot-9 Kahuku hoopster in a different direction. Now a sophomore at Mississippi State, the now 6-10 Smith is averaging 14 points and nine rebounds per game for the Bulldogs. “It’s been a tough journey in all honesty. I knew personally what I wanted to accomplish and still want to accomplish to this day, but it hasn’t been the […]

Relief and redemption: Boltyn Taam’s rise to All-American

By Paul Honda on December 24, 2020

When the challenge is toughest, state wrestling champion Boltyn Taam is at his best. The Moanalua senior came home from Tulsa, OK. with a new prize: All-American status. Taam earned the honor after a superb performance at the World of Wrestling Kickoff Classic. The achievement came months after Taam — a state champion as a sophomore — lost in the state tournament as a junior. He regained his momentum after the state tourney, working diligently through the spring and summer. […]
