Saint Louis jumps to No. 36 in national poll

By Nick Abramo on November 16, 2015

Saint Louis rose 69 spots to No. 36 in the latest MaxPreps national computer rankings released Sunday. The Crusaders (9-1) are coming off a 56-30 victory over Mililani in the Division I state semifinals. They’ll play Kahuku (12-0), which dropped 54 spots nationally after last weekend’s 13-0 win over Waianae in the other D-I semifinal, on Friday in the state title game at Aloha Stadium. In addition, Saint Louis is ranked No. 8 in the Pacific region by USA Today. […]

Uemoto, Ewing building a juggernaut

By Paul Honda on November 15, 2015

They almost pulled it out, this unsung team from Konawaena. Coming within a 2-point conversion of tying the game in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats’ 48-46 loss to No. 2 seed Radford is probably the most entertaining game I’ve seen this season. (Note: I was not at the crazy 51-45 overtime game between Punahou and Saint Louis in the ILH’s first round.) Konawaena may have played its best game of the year and still fell a few PATs short. They […]

Big ‘O’ carries Radford to finals

By Paul Honda on November 15, 2015

With Radford’s roller-coaster 48-46 win over a vastly underrated Konawaena squad on Saturday night, there’s is one final step for the unbeaten Rams (12-0) and their dream of a state championship. Kapaa, which blanked a young Lahainaluna team 24-0, shares that same dream. Maybe shares isn’t the right word. Sharing anything but good sportsmanship is all Radford and Kapaa will be doing on Friday night in the Division II title game of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. “I’m […]

Moanalua, Radford win state cheerleading

By Christian Shimabuku on November 14, 2015

Moanalua and Radford won the large and medium divisions, respectively, at the 2015 Zippy’s/HHSAA Cheerleading State Championships on Sunday. 30 teams ranging from intermediate to varsity squads performed their routines at the Neal S Blaisdell Arena. Four teams competed in the large division, 13 teams competed in the medium, and the rest were JV and intermediate squads who performed as an exhibition. Both divisions were rated by a panel of judges on a 375-point scale. In the large division, Moanalua […]

June Jones watched Saint Louis’ semifinal win

By Nick Abramo on November 14, 2015

June Jones was in the house Friday night, and it’s possible he might be in that house a lot more next football season. Jones, the highly successful football coach at the University of Hawaii from 1999 to 2007, was on the sideline not far from the Saint Louis bench during the Crusaders’ 56-30 victory over Mililani in the Division I state semifinals. He appeared to be enjoying himself, talking to many well-wishers and saying hello to people he hasn’t seen […]

Kahuku’s Tata still looking for complete game

By Nick Abramo on November 14, 2015

Vavae Tata herded his Kahuku boys into the locker room after the Red Raiders’ 13-0 victory over Waianae on Friday at Aloha Stadium. Some of the players were greeting fans near the mauka sideline and did not get to the locker fast enough. Whatever he was about to tell them was serious. Celebrating the Division I state semifinal win could wait. After emerging from the lockers afterward, Tata didn’t say exactly what he told the team, but he did tell […]

Final Four: What Have We Learned?

By Paul Honda on November 14, 2015

This dang rain hasn’t stopped. It stalls though. It holds up every now and then. But tonight? It hasn’t really stopped. At times, the wet stuff fell from the Halawa sky relentlessly. Not enough to create huge puddles right away. Just wet enough to make any receiver think twice about fundamentals. And more than moisture, there was wind. It was constant from the mauka end zone to the makai, especially early in the day when Waianae and Kahuku played. By […]

Mililani’s Malepeai is all-time rushing king

By Billy Hull on November 13, 2015

Mililani senior running back Vavae Malepeai is Hawaii’s new all-time rushing king. The 6-foot, 205-pound University of Oregon commit surpassed Joe Igber‘s 17-year record of 4,428 career rushing yards on a 15-yard run in the third quarter of Friday night’s Division I state semifinal game against Saint Louis. Malepeai, who also holds the rushing touchdowns record with 71, did it in his 37th game and on his 674th carry. He had 20 carries for 131 yards in the first half […]
