By Paul Honda on February 27, 2021

Another day, another nail biter. Both times, Kamehameha came up with one more play. Led by Xavier Lever’s 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, the Warriors rallied from a 11-point second-half deficit for a 43-42 exhibition win over ‘Iolani on Saturday morning, completing a home-and-home sweep of the Raiders within a 16-hour span. In the second game, ‘Iolani’s girls pulled away for a 62-40 win over the Warrior wahine. Kamehameha had a senior-day celebration for the girls after the […]

By Paul Honda on February 26, 2021

News of the ILH board’s decision to cancel spring football spread quickly on Friday night. “We were waiting on it, and once school ended (on Friday), we got the text that there isn’t going to be a season,” Punahou senior defensive back Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen said. The ILH board made the decision to cancel football, judo, water polo and kayaking. Football had been postponed since fall of 2020. COVID-19 numbers have dwindled in recent weeks, and Oahu is now in Tier […]

‘Board meetings’ a way of life as Kamehameha Coach Chris Blake awaits ILH update

By Paul Honda on February 26, 2021

There are board meetings and there are board meetings. When the heads of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu conclude their meeting today (Friday), there may be relief for traditional volleyball practitioners. That would include 10-time state championship coach Chris Blake of Kamehameha. While the top officials of the private-school league discuss matters concerning prep sports and safety, Blake has kept his program alert and active while abiding by all COVID-19 protocols. The Warriors run on the track. Tradition. They do […]

Move to Tier 3 could have impact on ILH decisions for spring and postponed sports

By Paul Honda on February 25, 2021

There are possibilities under Tier 3 that didn’t exactly exist in Tier 2 for Oahu’s youth and high school athletes. The executive order was officially approved by Gov. David Ige on Thursday morning, 12:01 a.m. The move into a more lenient and flexible tier — for the first time since the pandemic forced closure of schools last March — means organized youth and high school sports have a stronger chance of returning for spring season. That includes football and girls […]

AJ Bianco’s 23/10 powers Saint Louis past Tar Heels BC, 63-52

By Paul Honda on February 24, 2021

AJ Bianco has one question. “When is football going to start?” The 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback has been raring to go since the sport was postponed last fall by the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. In the meantime, as Saint Louis’ powerful post on the hardwood, Bianco came up big on Wednesday night with 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists as the Crusaders withstood a gritty effort by Tar Heels Basketball Club for a 63-52 win. Saint Louis improved to 11-0 […]

HBA long-range bomber Emi Wada thriving in exhibition action

By Paul Honda on February 24, 2021

The last time a Wada splashed this many 3-point shots, it was Ally, the two-sport standout now playing volleyball at Portland State. The youngest of the Wada sisters, Emi, doesn’t spike or serve. The junior guard poured in 19 points in a loss to Kamehameha on Saturday, pumping in three treys in the final quarter. That triggered a question that was on the territory of Ally Wada’s roundball skill set: why not shoot more? Ally Wada was capable of scoring […]

Paliku Kamaka, Oni Pung spark Kamehameha in 55-53 comeback win over Punahou

By Paul Honda on February 23, 2021

Paliku Kamaka scored 13 points and Onipa‘a Pung scored five of his 10 points in the final quarter as Kamehameha rallied from an eight-point deficit for a 55-53 win over Punahou in exhibition basketball action on Tuesday at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. “It was more focus on what each responsibility was. If they all focus on what they need to do offensively and defensively, then the end result is a little better,” Warriors Coach Larry Park said. “Punahou, we have good games […]
