Punahou’s girls and ‘Iolani boys waited 16 months for another shot at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title. It was worth the wait. The Buffanblu, coached by Duncan Macdonald, rode their depth and a near-individual title by Sasha Iizuka-Sheeley to capture the ILH girls cross country team title at Mid-Pacific Institute. The Raider boys charged to their team title behind a strong individual runner-up finish by freshman Devin Pang. Punahou is the winner of the last eight girls cross country […]

By Paul Honda on March 12, 2021

Two long years have passed since the ‘Iolani Raiders won the state softball championship. The field that ‘Iolani repaired years ago, adjacent to Ala Wai Elementary School, is actually property of the City and County of Honolulu. By the time school lets out, other groups are […]

By Paul Honda on March 9, 2021

There will be no showcase battle between the Trench Dawgz of Hawaii and Winner Circle Athletics of Southern California. According to TD Coach Whitley Fehoko, WCA cited a lack of available players on Saturday as the reason for the cancellation of the highly-anticipated matchup, which had been set for Mar. 16. California opened high school football for the spring season, resulting in a flood of talent returning to school teams. Playing in an club exhibition during school season is not […]

Kamehameha’s William Ho, Madison Murata are favorites in ILH cross country championships

By Paul Honda on March 9, 2021

So few races, so many potential winners. Cross country was cancelled across the state in the 2020-21 academic year with the exception of one entity: the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The private-school organization postponed all fall sports, and one of the few to be revived in the winter was cross country. With strict COVID-19 protocols, runners have remained on courses with only their teammates in staggered schedule formats. When the ILH championships run at Mid-Pacific Institute on Saturday, there will […]
