Kaiser kicker Kyler Halvorsen commits to Washington State

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2021

Patience is a way of life for placekickers. That same trait came in handy during the recruiting process for Kaiser senior Kyler Halvorsen. Roughly a dozen D-I programs showed interest in the strong-footed two-sport athlete, but Halvorsen committed to Washington State on Tuesday afternoon. Cal, Hawaii and several more programs, including Wake Forest, had flirted with Halvorsen, but didn’t make quite the same opportunity available. He will be a preferred walk-on (PWO) as a freshman, with a chance to earn […]

2019 softball state champ ‘Iolani making best of modified environment

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2021

In 2020, one year after Aleia Agyabani’s monster, All-State player of the year season, the ‘Iolani Raiders were ready to prove any doubters wrong. Instead, the spring season of ’20 was wiped away by the COVID-19 pandemic, and as the ’21 regular season approaches, ‘Iolani Coach Benny Agbayani has a slightly different perspective. “We’re just winging this season and kind of preparing more for next season. I’m going to use this time to develop my players and try to get […]

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2021

Coach Kalepa Feguis has waited and waited. Eighteen months passed since the Maryknoll girls volleyball team has played an official match. That long stretch ended last week with wins over Sacred Hearts and St. Andrew’s Priory. On Tuesday night, the Spartans host longtime Division II powerhouse Hawaii Baptist. “We feel very excited and blessed to have a chance to play this season. We are cautiously optimistic, doing our best to stay healthy and comply with all the regulations,” Feguis said. […]

Punahou chasing ILH softball crown with heavy dose of sophomores

By Paul Honda on March 29, 2021

Dave Eldredge has seen a lot in his decades of coaching. Nothing compares to this pandemic year, he says. As Punahou prepares for a big season opener at Kamehameha on Wednesday, he is learning to reel in his level of expectations a bit. “Only recently have I noticed this. We’re bringing back these girls after missing last year, but as they’re practicing, they’re not playing up to what I think a senior, junior or sophomore should be. But it occurred […]

Former Lunas standout Maiki Tihada lands job at Maui Prep

By Paul Honda on March 29, 2021

To go full circle, Maiki Tihada reached back to square one. The former Lahainaluna standout is now the girls basketball coach at Maui Preparatory Academy. The challenge of building a program from scratch, particularly in the highly competitive Maui Interscholastic League, isn’t a preferred situation for a lot of coaches. The program will begin with junior varsity. Tihada, 27, embraces it. “I’m excited. What interested me most is building from the ground up. The school in general is changing the […]

By Paul Honda on March 27, 2021

Growing up in Punaluu, Reginald Torres was a busy, active boy. “Reggie” knew everybody. Everybody knew Reggie. Above all, he grew up playing multiple sports with a love for learning that was matched by his love for competition. These days, he and wife Lita have a new love: 10 grandchildren. “I like to stay young at heart, to stay busy. I’m lucky enough that I can still move with my grandchildren, so I want to keep moving with them as […]
