Campbell ace Taryn Irimata hurls perfect game against Kapolei Charter

By Paul Honda on April 20, 2021

Perfection is spelled S-A-B-E-R-S. It can also be spelled I-R-I-M-A-T-A. Campbell sophomore Taryn Irimata fired a perfect game on Tuesday as the Sabers overwhelmed Kapolei Charter 10-0 in six innings to launch the OIA regular season. Irimata’s mastery of four pitches — fastball, screwball, curve and riser — kept the visitors off balance. She let her defense work, too. The Sabers were flawless, finishing without an error. The one KC batter who managed to get to a three-ball count on […]

By Paul Honda on April 20, 2021

Historic Waialua is home to some of Oahu’s rooted history in the sugar industry. Waialua High School, though, has made history of its own in the past decade with its softball program. The Lady Bulldogs won the OIA Division II crown in 2019 and reached the state semifinals after a 12-6 win over Honokaa. Wailua lost to Kohala, 6-5, but looked forward to a prosperous ’20 season. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the ’20 spring sports season. […]

By Paul Honda on April 19, 2021

At Aloha Stadium, shortly after Mill Vill’s preseason JPS win over Waipahu, two powerhouse club teams butted heads. The Trench Dawgz and MBC Athletics met up in an epic battle that came down to a two-point conversion attempt by the Dawgz in the final three minutes. MBC stopped the Trench Dawgz’ I-formation run play for a 14-13 win. The defensive battle — three sacks by MBC’s Raphael Leapaga — had playoff intensity from start to finish. A relatively low number […]

Evaluation, development key for Saint Louis, Mill Vill in scrimmages

By Paul Honda on April 19, 2021

High school football has largely been frozen in the sultry confines of on-campus fields across Hawaii. In the midst of a global pandemic, it took the cancellation of prep football to open the door for actual competition: a school team and a club team. Saint Louis, which set a precedent during the winter by playing 13 exhibition basketball games, became the first school to play a football scrimmage in the 2020-21 academic year. The Crusaders scrimmaged the Mill Vill Trojans […]

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2021

Ua Nakoa-Chung likes to stay hungry. The Maryknoll ace skipped breakfast, as usual for a morning game, and fireballed her way to a four-hitter in a six-inning, 11-1 rout of Kamehameha on Saturday morning in a showdown at Sand Island State Recreation Area. Maryknoll is now the sole leader with a 5-0 record in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Kamehameha dropped to 4-1. “The key for us is that we play the game we’re supposed to be playing. This is […]

Mill Vill mantra: ‘Humility, unconditional love form unbreakable bond’

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2021

After some hesitation, Mililani/Mill Ville football coach Rod York shared his thoughts about the why of his mission. The longtime varsity head coach opened the Mill Vill JPS squad for high schoolers , middle schoolers and elementary-age flag football players several years ago. Essentially, as a coach, it is volunteer work. The hours. The sweat. Contemporaries like Saint Louis coach Ron Lee support York’s mission, but there are some detractors who question York’s intent. Even after all these years. “I’m […]
