Teshya Alo at Blaisdell to support Teniya

By Nick Abramo on February 18, 2017

One is a four-time state champ and one is going for her second state title with the possibility of a third next year. They are the Alo sisters. Teshya Alo was at the Blaisdell Arena on Friday to watch sister Teniya Alo in the early rounds of the 2017 state wrestling tournament. And while Teshya is not in high school anymore, she is there to offer support and knowledge to Teniya’s camp. “I feel really good about it, but I […]

Getting Kahuku job ‘humbled’ Freitas

By Nick Abramo on February 18, 2017

Makoa Freitas learned a lot from former coaches Dick Tomey at Arizona and Tony Dungy with the Indianapolis Colts. You could have worse mentors. A lot worse. Freitas said on Thursday that he will bring with him what he learned from those coaches and others to the Kahuku sidelines. Freitas was recently hired as the head coach of the Red Raiders. “I don’t know what happened that led to the change,” said Freitas, referring to the school’s release of two-year […]

Saint Francis completes the march

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 18, 2017

This time, Saint Francis finished the state tournament the way it started. Last year, the Saints were awarded the top seed in the Division II boys basketball bracket but settled for third after a three-point loss to Seabury Hall in the semifinals and watched University celebrate the title. The Saints got back to work this season and rolled to the ILH D-II title to again earn the No. 1 distinction in the eight-team state tournament field. They won their first-round […]

Falcons continue their climb

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 18, 2017

Facing a 13-point deficit with less than 90 seconds left, Kalani nearly completed the arduous climb in Friday’s Division II state championship game. But the furious rally stalled after closing to within three with 22.6 seconds remaining, leaving the Falcons again just short of the peak. Saint Francis managed to protect just enough of the lead to capture the D-II title of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball Championships with a 52-46 win Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Kalani, the tournament’s […]

Kahuku captures 1st boys hoops state title

By Paul Honda on February 17, 2017

The fourth time is the charm for Kahuku boys basketball. After three previous trips to the state championship game in Division I and its predecessor, top-seeded Kahuku finally broke through on Saturday with a 70-55 win over second-seeded Punahou. In a basketball symphony of roles and explosions, the Red Raiders got perhaps their most balanced and consistent performance in a year of near perfection. Jessiya Villa led all scorers with 23 points and added seven rebounds and three assists. He […]

Girls get a shot at greatness

By Jerry Campany on February 17, 2017

The last three years have featured some of the most dominant girls wrestling squads of all time, could Lahainaluna raise the bar even higher on Saturday? The Lunas got seven of their nine wrestlers into the semifinals on Friday, leaving them alive for seven titles. That would be more than any school ever. And ever only goes back three years. Kamehameha got five champions last year, Lahainaluna did it the year before and the Warriors did it in 2014. Lahainaluna’s […]
