Wild momentum swings, wild finish in Kaiser’s 12-11 nail-biter over Campbell

By Paul Honda on May 6, 2021

This was a test of the emotions, a preponderance of numerals in any normal baseball scorebook. Kaiser’s 12-11 win over Campbell, decided by a bases-loaded error in the bottom of the seventh inning, was not quite as rip-roaring as ‘Iolani’s recent 18-17 softball extravaganza with Maryknoll. But the emotions churned as Kaiser rolled up 11 runs in the bottom of the second inning, saw a 10-run lead evaporate, only to push the game-winning run across the plate in a fitting […]

Team-first mentality key to Punahou boys’ ILH championship

By Paul Honda on May 5, 2021

The depth is real, but the emotional consistency is total Punahou. The Buffanblu not only defeated Kamehameha for the ILH boys volleyball title on Tuesday night. They did it with proper measurements of finesse, power, verve and poise. The 25-17, 25-11 win said less about Kamehameha, which is arguably the second-best team in the state, and more about the way Punahou peaked in the most important stage of the season. “I’m really proud of all the guys. They all had […]

Kamehameha’s ILH girls volleyball crown is ‘FTP’

By Paul Honda on May 5, 2021

For the Princess, the Kamehameha Warriors were prepared to their best. They did exactly that in a 25-22, 25-20 sweep of Punahou, on the Buffanblu’s home court, to capture the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls volleyball championship on Tuesday night. Every Warrior had “FTP” written on her wrist, a motto to honor the founder of Kamehameha Schools, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Each time a Warriors went up to swing or block, “FTP” in black ink was above the net by […]

Lovey leadership: Young Leilehua Mules pack in games, exhibitions

By Paul Honda on May 4, 2021

The present is a gift for the Leilehua Mules, who are making the most of it with their young softball squad. The Mules are 2-1-1 in the rugged Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division. On Friday night, Leilehua meets West co-leader Campbell in a classic matchup. The shortened season — no playoffs, no state tournament — means coach Wendell Au has been busy scheduling exhibition games, too. In addition to their four OIA West games, Leilehua has played Moanalua and Kaiser […]

Punahou, Kamehameha girls square off for ILH volleyball crown

By Paul Honda on May 4, 2021

The Kamehameha Warriors have won 10 state championships over the past 16 seasons under coach Chris Blake. Still, when Punahou hosts Kamehameha for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls volleyball title tonight, the Buffanblu won’t be star-struck. Punahou (8-1) split with the Warriors during the regular season and earned the top seed in the single-elimination playoff tournament. Behind the versatility and consistency of their 6-footers, Punahou swept a game Le Jardin squad on Saturday night to reach the final. Kamehameha […]

Staying in Tune: Punahou hosts Kamehameha for ILH boys title

By Paul Honda on May 4, 2021

In the blink of an eye, the ILH boys volleyball season is nearly done. Maybe the shrunken season and shorter matches – best-of-three rather than best-of-five — give No. 2 seed Kamehameha the window they need. Punahou (11-0), winner of the last eight state championships (and 10 of the last 11) swept Kamehameha (6-3) during the regular season. Tonight’s title match begins at 5 p.m. in Hemmeter Fieldhouse. Punahou’s junior-heavy squad ousted Hawaii Baptist in the semifinal round 25-14, 25-18. […]

BYU chasing Kahuku sophomores Liona Lefau, Brock Cravens Fonoimoana, Leonard Ah You

By Paul Honda on May 3, 2021

Three offers from BYU to three Kahuku Red Raiders in the same day. It could be a first. The program in blue has been connected to the program in red for ages. Brock Cravens Fonoimoana, Leonard Ah You and Liona Lefau may be the answer to a trivia question now. All three are sophomores and all three played with the Rebel Squad, which won the varsity (no seniors) division at the Pylon Mecca 7×7 tournament last week in Mesquite, Nev. […]

Steady, relentless effort pushes Punahou past Le Jardin in ILH semifinal

By Paul Honda on May 2, 2021

Condensation has led to inspiration for the Punahou Buffanblu. The Buffanblu girls volleyball team took the best shots Le Jardin could offer and swept the Lady Bulldogs 25-14, 25-18 on Saturday night in the semifinal round of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu playoffs. Punahou will meet rival Kamehameha for the league championship on Tuesday at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. Junior Lucky-Rose Williams paced the unbeaten Buffanblu with nine kills (.300), seven digs and one ace. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter was at her […]
