That would make him… Magic Johnson? His skill at mobilizing some of the most impactful people in island sports remains unmatched. When the CPB Foundation announced on Wednesday a group donation to public high school sports of $250,000, it was no surprise that the former executive director of […]

By Paul Honda on May 12, 2021

It wiped out his junior season of track, where he is the top sprinter in the 100- and 200-meter events. It wiped out his football season as a senior, reducing his opportunities to a preferred walk-on opportunity at Washington. With […]

By Paul Honda on May 8, 2021

During the drudgery of the pandemic, with nothing open and virtually everything off limits, DJ Akiyama’s refuge was hiding in plain sight. The batting cage was his sanctuary. Thousands of residents drive by it every day in Aiea. They probably missed the 6-foot hitman taking his cuts, hour after hour, day after day. “It’s pretty much a therapy thing,” Akiyama said after going 3-for-3 with three RBIs in Aiea’s 8-6 come-from-behind win over Campbell on Friday afternoon. “It’s just I […]
