The Kaiser varsity football team is playing against the odds and so far it’s looking like a ball of fun. The lesson is in front of them. Not football. Life. The Cougars had 17 players suited up for a three-team scrimmage against McKinley and Aiea at the Tigers’ home field Saturday. Another handful were on the bench in street clothes, not ready for action for various reasons. Playing Division I football in the Oahu Interscholastic Association with such a small […]

PREP FOOTBALL COUNTDOWN: No. 7 Kamehameha

By Jason Kaneshiro on July 28, 2017

Thomas Yam’s first varsity start remains vivid in his memory. “I knew I was going to play, but I didn’t know I was going to go in that early,” Yam recalled of his debut at Waianae in Kamehameha’s 2015 season opener. “But going in there I just had to calm myself down. I was nervous in front of the Waianae crowd and I had to lean on my seniors to help me settle down and just play the game.” The […]

Saint Louis and Campbell bang heads [+video]

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2017

Near the end of Thursday’s football scrimmage on the Saint Louis campus, coaches Cal Lee of the Crusaders and Campbell’s Darren Johnson greeted one another jovially behind the line of scrimmage. Seeing the two ol’ deep-rooted veterans of football wars shaking hands was a sure sign that the long-awaited high school season is here. And the best joke of the day was at Johnson’s expense. One of the assistant coaches came over to Johnson when the scrimmage was done and […]

Kamehameha still working out the kinks. Kahuku ends the Warriors’ possession with a whistled sack. Quite a performance by the Red Raiders. ### New QB in for Kahuku. No ID, but he’s definitely not Maiava. Sun has set a hot afternoon has transformed into a beautiful evening at Kapalama Heights. Still a top 3 site to enjoy a football game. The laulau plate sold out early. Mostly Bob Marley tunes piped through the system. Even the backup is not hesitating […]
