Heartbreak? Saint Louis sprinter Keanu Wallace takes it all in stride

By Paul Honda on May 15, 2021

Keanu Wallace had what could have been a heartbreaking week, but in his irrepressible way, he never stopped surging forward. By the time the ILH boys track and field championships ended on Friday — with a lengthy shower, of course — Wallace was at peace. He was actually at peace for much of the week, despite the circumstances. After losing the 2020 track season, then his senior year of football to the pandemic, the blazing-fast wide receiver/sprinter had two football […]

2 golds and a silver for Kamehameha’s mathlete, William Ho

By Paul Honda on May 15, 2021

Back in the day, track and field athletes had no limit to the number of events they entered. Joy Purdy carried Hana when she was an elite athlete in the early 1980s. There weren’t a whole lot of sprinters/jumpers/vaulters/throwers/runners carrying major loads now that they are limited to four. William Ho tried his version of maximum load at the ILH boys track and field championships, winning the 800- and 1,500-meter runs, placing second in the 3,000 and running a leg […]

Maryknoll atop ILH D-II volleyball throne, but what’s next?

By Paul Honda on May 14, 2021

It won’t be awhile before Maryknoll seriously considers a move to the upper echelon of ILH girls volleyball. Maybe a year. Maybe more. Maybe less. After sweeping Hawaii Baptist in two sets, 25-20, 25-19, to win the ILH Division II championship on Thursday, it is quite possible that the Spartans program is destined to move on up. “I say it’s too early to expect anything. We just want to keep working on our system. We don’t feel we’ve gotten to […]

Extra mileage is a way of life every day for Caleb Lomavita. Maybe he took the night off on Thursday. He certainly earned it. Saint Louis will meet Punahou for the ILH title on Saturday. The Cal signee finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored. One the mound, […]

By Paul Honda on May 14, 2021

What happens when a journalism teacher who coaches track and field takes on the task of a short preseason due to a global pandemic? Coach Brook Nasser shared her perspective about her Kalani Falcons as they enter the final weekend of their brief season. With no Oahu Interscholastic Association championships and no state championship meet, Saturday’s event at Kaiser Stadium will be the finale. “Despite a short season and coming off a year of limited to no activity, Kalani athletes […]

Maryknoll seniors bask in championship glow after 11-1 win over ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on May 13, 2021

It took awhile, maybe 30 minutes after the final out, but the Maryknoll Spartans finally gave coach John Uekawa a Gatorade shower. Maryknoll’s 11-1, five-inning win over ‘Iolani on Wednesday night made it three softball crowns in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Long after the media interviews and post-game team meeting, the Spartans were to themselves in Tiger Softball Stadium, preparing to leave. Then, two of them got ahold of the Gatorade jug. Uekawa never had a chance. The warm […]
