By Billy Hull on August 20, 2017

Oregon linebacker Kaulana Apelu, a walk-on from Kamehameha who tore his ACL in both his junior and senior seasons of high school, had years of hard work pay off Sunday when he was rewarded with an athletic scholarship from the Ducks. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound junior was surprised before Sunday’s practice with a video that featured his mother telling him he was on scholarship. Here is video of the moment from the @OregonFootball Twitter account. "If you have a dream, never […]

The reality of 2 tiers: 208-20

By Billy Hull on August 20, 2017

The OIA football regular season began last week providing some exciting moments for schools struggling to field competitive football teams under the current two-tier alignment. Radford, coming off a winless season in which it managed only one offensive touchdown, nearly pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback against Castle, finishing with more points in the game than it had scored the entire previous season in an entertaining 33-28 loss. Nanakuli, which also went winless in 2016, picked up its first victory under […]

Buchanan makes history with TD pass

By Christian Shimabuku on August 20, 2017

Alexandria Buchanan remembers the days that she would sling the old pigskin around with her father when she was little. She didn’t play organized football until joining a flag football league in the seventh grade, but that’s where she says her love of the sport truly developed. Her journey hit its crescendo on Saturday night when the McKinley sophomore quarterback became the first girl in Hawaii to throw a touchdown pass in a game. She found Ace Asis on a […]

Hawaii is a popular destination, and it is becoming a popular football destination nowadays. Four teams from the mainland played Hawaii teams and three of the visiting teams (Mission Viejo, Calif.; Villa Park, Calif.; and St. Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) won. The other visitor (Buckeye Union, Ariz.) lost a close one at No. 8 Kailua, 28-27. Seven of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 teams were in action. The three Top 10 teams from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu […]

VIDEO: Campbell overwhelms Aiea 48-13

By Paul Honda on August 20, 2017

Balance is always a luxury for most offenses, but the Campbell Sabers are finding that they can be less predictable and very explosive by air and land. The Sabers overwhelmed Aiea 48-13 on Saturday, pounding on the ground just one week after taking to the air against Farrington.

Sabers refuse to be one-dimensional on offense

By Paul Honda on August 20, 2017

Three games into the Darren Johnson era at Campbell — including a 2-0 start to OIA regular-season play — the Sabers are finding their new identity. A week after junior quarterback Krenston Kaipo passed for 386 yards in a win over Farrington, the seventh-ranked Sabers found more running room in a 48-13 win over a pesky Aiea squad on Saturday night at Campbell. The Sabers rushed 26 times for 163 yards while Kaipo was 9-for-16 with 191 passing yards. That […]

Kapolei’s offense hits a higher gear

By Nick Abramo on August 20, 2017

No June Jones. No Taulia Tagovailoa. No problem. The Kapolei offense is in fine hands with new offensive coordinator Amosa Amosa, new quarterback Kaniala Kalaola and … the head coach who has been there since the start of the Hurricanes football program — Darren Hernandez. The thinking by many in the preseason was that without Jones as OC and without Tagovailoa at QB, the Kapolei offense would be nowhere near where it was last year, when the Hurricanes made it […]

By Hawaii Prep World on August 19, 2017

Pearl City and Roosevelt meet in the second game of a doubleheader tonight at Aloha Stadium in what has always been an entertaining series. The series is tied 7-7-1 but Pearl City has won the last five dating back to a tie in 2007. Roosevelt’s last win over Pearl City was way back in 2002.
