Former UH volleyball coach Shoji helps fire up Farrington

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 24, 2017

Before joining Saturday’s homecoming festivities, the Farrington football team received a lesson in fun from a volleyball legend. While the Skippa Diaz Stadium stands filled for the school’s first on-campus homecoming/senior night, former University of Hawaii volleyball coach Dave Shoji helped prepare the Governors in the locker room below as their pregame speaker. “It was such an asset to have him there to share his wisdom with the boys,” said Farrington coach Randall Okimoto, who attends Metro Christian Church along […]

Leilehua’s McGary runs wild against Kailua

By Nick Abramo on September 24, 2017

Right after James McGary ripped off two straight 25-yard runs in the third quarter Saturday night, it was time to look up Leilehua’s single-game record for rushing. At that point of the Mules’ eventual 38-14 victory over Kailua, McGary was already at 232 yards on the ground. The record: Adrian Murrell‘s 332 set in 1987. Could he get there? Or would he finish the night as Leilehua’s single-game leading rusher not named Murrell? Murrell — who went on to a […]

No. 3 Mililani wraps up OIA Red title

By Kyle Sakamoto on September 24, 2017

Mililani coach Rod York got what he wanted Saturday against Nanakuli: his team wrapped up the OIA Red division title and his reserves got plenty of playing time. Although the game wound up being fairly close at the end. Junior Dillon Gabriel completed 31 of 45 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns as No. 3 Mililani beat visiting Nanakuli 44-33. “It was a goal of ours and fortunately for us our kids played hard and executed,” York said of […]

Lee on Narbonne: ‘It could’ve gone either way’

By Paul Honda on September 23, 2017

As a lifelong aficionado of defensive dominance, Cal Lee wasn’t altogether dissatisfied. A 56-50 win by his Saint Louis Crusaders over Los Angeles powerhouse Narbonne – winner of seven City league titles in 15 seasons — was a demonstration of superb run defense: 80 rushing yards on 26 carries (3 yards per attempt). Saint Louis’ normally air-tight defense wasn’t so tight elsewhere. Gauchos quarterback Jalen Chatman passed for 517 yards and five TDs. “We sure didn’t play much pass defense. […]

Narbonne’s offense carves up Saint Louis’ defense

By Paul Honda on September 23, 2017

The Narbonne Gauchos have fielded stronger, deeper, more experienced teams in recent seasons. Still, in 2017 they ventured out of state, all the way to the middle of the Pacific, to take on Hawaii powerhouse Saint Louis. The trek was worthwhile. The promise and potential they showed in four games, including losses to Long Beach Poly and Centennial, were fully on display at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night in an instant-classic, made-for-TV-but-wasn’t-on-TV 56-50 loss to Saint Louis. Quarterback Jalen Chatman […]

Nawahine enjoying his time at Kahuku

By Christian Shimabuku on September 23, 2017

Enoch Nawahine is making the most of his time at Kahuku in what will be his only season suiting up for the Red Raiders. That’s because the senior spent the first three years of his prep career at Punahou, where he was in a crowded backfield on a team that was pass heavy in 2016 and relied on star Wayne Taulapapa to run the ball in 2015. “I just wanted to come home and play with family and friends, and […]

HAWAII GROWN: Tagovailoa, Milton shine in victories

By Nick Abramo on September 23, 2017

Freshman Tua Tagovailoa threw for 103 yards and two touchdowns in Alabama’s 59-0 road victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday. Sophomore McKenzie Milton aired it out for 178 yards and a touchdown in UCF’s 38-10 home win over Maryland. Two of the best quarterbacks who have come out of high school football in Hawaii had banner days. Tagovailoa’s 27-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith — after coming in for starting QB Jalen Hurts in the third quarter — was a spectacular […]
