HAWAII GROWN: Mata’afa has WSU thinking Pac-12 title

By Billy Hull on September 30, 2017

Washington State defensive end Hercules Mata’afa, a 2014 Lahainaluna alum, had five tackles with two tackles for loss in the Cougars’ 30-27 win over No. 5 Southern California on Friday in Pullman, Wash. Washington State, ranked No. 16 this week, improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2001 and won its first regular-season game against a team ranked in the top five in 25 years. Mata’afa, who leads all active Pac-12 players in career tackles for loss, upped his […]

Martinez steps down at Kaiser

By Billy Hull on September 30, 2017

Arnold Martinez informed school officials today that he is stepping down as Kaiser football coach. The Cougars forfeited all but one of their games this season due to low turnout. They were going to play their homecoming game against Moanalua on Sept. 22 before an altercation at the school four days earlier resulted in principal Justin Mew announcing they were canceling the rest of the season. Martinez, who went 51-51-1 in 11 seasons at Moanalua from 2003-13, was the fifth […]

No. 2 Kahuku is still king in OIA Blue

By Nick Abramo on September 30, 2017

In six games against Hawaii oppoents, the Kahuku defense has given up just two touchdowns — one against Aiea and one against Moanalua. Other than that, it’s all zeros for the four other Hawaii offenses the Red Raiders’ defense has faced, including No. 7 Campbell on Friday night. Although the Sabers did score points on Kahuku in the Red Raiders’ 45-6 victory, it was Campbell’s defense that put the points on the board against Kahuku’s offense. “Our defense played well […]

Purcell: “We took (giving up 50) personally.”

By Billy Hull on September 30, 2017

There wasn’t anything pretty about No. 1 Saint Louis’ 23-12 victory over No. 5 Kamehameha on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. And it suited Saint Louis linebacker Noa Purcell just fine. Six days after the Crusaders won a shootout, 56-50, over Narbonne (Calif.), the offense was bottled up for much of the game by a bend-but-don’t-break Kamehameha defense. The Warriors gave up 376 passing yards to Saint Louis quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, but forced three turnovers, including one in the red […]

Moanalua takes a 3-game win streak into playoffs

By Kyle Sakamoto on September 30, 2017

Moanalua receiver Ezra Grace felt bad for making a mistake on an apparent touchdown pass that was called back late in the game Friday against Radford. He more than made up for it on the next play. Grace caught three touchdown passes from Nick Au, including a 40-yarder late in the game, as Moanalua wrapped up the OIA Blue’s No. 4 seed in the league playoffs with a 21-20 victory over Radford at Aiea. Na Menehune’s Ezra Bantolina hauled in […]

Watson excited for the future at Nanakuli

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 30, 2017

As Nanakuli’s seniors savored a few more moments on the field, Kili Watson’s thoughts were already drifting toward the future. Watson saw his first season as Nanakuli’s head coach end Friday night with a 36-0 loss to Kapolei in the regular-season finale for both teams. After Kapolei secured the final berth in the OIA Division I playoffs, Nanakuli celebrated senior night with a heartfelt postgame ceremony punctuated by recorded messages from the senior’s parents. “I’ve seen tremendous growth from our […]

Andres brings poise to Mules’ ground and pound

By Paul Honda on September 30, 2017

The numbers don’t look drastically different, but Kona Andres is another kind of quarterback this season. With second place in the division — and a first-round bye — on the line, he was masterful in Leilehua’s 33-6 win over Farrington on Friday night at Hugh Yoshida Stadium. That gave the 10th-ranked Mules a 5-2 mark in division play (6-2 overall). A year ago, the Mules were young and struggling against the best of the OIA’s Division I teams. Andres often […]

Kalani closes season on high note

By Christian Shimabuku on September 29, 2017

No team wants to have its season end in September, but no team wants to end its season with a loss, either. With full knowledge that Friday night’s contest would be its last of the season, Kalani rode the electric arm of Seth Tina-Soberano and kept its foot on the pedal in a 41-13 rout of Kalaheo in what doubled up as homecoming and senior night for the Falcons. “It’s great to end the season like this. It’s great to […]
