Saint Louis OL Jonah Savaiinaea commits to Arizona

By Paul Honda on June 23, 2021

Saint Louis offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea has committed to Arizona so quietly, even his position coaches might be impressed. The 6-foot-4, 345-pound junior gave the Wildcats his oral commitment on Monday. “He liked it. He likes everything there and he wanted to commit,” Saint Louis coach Ron Lee said. “If he’s not the best offensive lineman in the state, I don’t know who is. He’s a huge get for Arizona. And he’s a really good student.” Savaiinaea has a 3.7 […]

Optional conditioning at Campbell draws 90 varsity, 65-plus JV prospects

By Paul Honda on June 22, 2021

While numbers at many prep football programs are fair to middling, the Campbell Sabers are bursting at the seams. The Sabers have roughly 90 players training for the varsity squad, and coach Darren Johnson will have to pare that down to 65 when official tryouts are done in July. A tri-scrimmage with Kahuku and Kaimuki on July 29 will help with evaluation immensely. “I think Kahuku and our team will run 2s and 3s,” Johnson said of depth charts. “What […]

Slow turnout has Waianae football in survive and advance mode

By Paul Honda on June 22, 2021

The challenge seems daunting, but Mike Fanoga is looking for small, everyday victories at Waianae. Weight training is back for the football squad, and momentum is building for a team with plenty of youth. “We’ve got less than 10 seniors. This group right here are all (former) JV except for four or five kids who played for me a year ago. Everyone’s gone from the 2021 class,” the Waianae coach said. “I’ve got new faces. That’s why we’re doing EDD […]

Former Maryknoll hoopster Sage Tolentino de-commits from Auburn

By Paul Honda on June 21, 2021

Last October, Sage Tolentino had one of the brightest days of his young career, committing to Auburn and coach Bruce Pearl. As of Monday, the 7-foot junior has de-committed from the Tigers. In a post on Instagram, he announced his decision in four sentences. “After a lot of discussion and talking with my family and coaches, I have to decided to reopen my recruitment and want to keep my options open at this time. I would like to thank Coach […]

Under the radar no more: Moanalua’s Keenan McCaddy commits to Boise State

By Paul Honda on June 21, 2021

In basketball and football, tall, long ballhawking playmakers are as coveted as ever. Coming to the islands to find these hybrid athletes wasn’t the norm. The arrow, though, is trending up, at least for Boise State. The Mountain West Conference’s dominant football program went 2-for-2 over the weekend, securing commitments from Moanalua’s Keenan McCaddy and Roosevelt’s Kaeo Akana. The latter, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound defensive end, already has 16 offers. He made his decision while returning from three unofficial visits, the […]

Committed: Rocky Mountain journey leads Roosevelt’s Kaeo Akana to Boise State

By Paul Honda on June 21, 2021

In the end, if this is so, Kaeo Akana’s selection process was never about branding. In fact, Akana’s oral commitment to Boise State was all about home. The right fit. When the Roosevelt football standout committed to the Broncos on Saturday, he joined a second family — and spurned a host of Pac-12 offers. In all, he has 16 scholarship offers. “To me, it doesn’t matter. Football is football. It doesn’t matter what conference you’re in or how big your […]

Player turnout going well for new Hilo head coach Chris Todd

By Paul Honda on June 18, 2021

A year ago, Chris Todd was very content to be a husband, father and friendly neighborhood state representative from Hilo. Today, he is still all of the above. Just add head coach to his list of duties. After 10 seasons as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator, and one year away from the game, Todd will guide the Vikings through their first football season since 2019. The timing worked out. Kaeo Drummondo stepped down as head coach after the ’19 […]

‘Official’ season or not, football coaches planning scrimmages, preseason games

By Paul Honda on June 17, 2021

(Saturday, 9:50 p.m. Nanakuli to scrimmage with Damien and Campbell on July 29.) (1:15 p.m. Updates with Waianae’s schedule.) (11:50 a.m. Updates with Moanalua’s schedule.) Somewhere out there, perhaps at many campuses, there are young football players who struggled prior to the pandemic. Maybe some of them are about to thrive with a fresh start. Coaches across the islands are busy scheduling scrimmages and preseason games, even as the official re-start of prep football has yet to be announced. Waipahu […]
