Waianae’s Rosario invited to Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on October 19, 2017

Waianae running back Rico Rosario, who set the Seariders’ single-game school rushing record with 243 yards earlier this season, has been selected to play in the 2018 Polynesian Bowl. Rosario (5-foot-10, 200 pounds), who was an All-State first-team selection as a junior after leading the state in rushing yards, is currently third on Oahu in Division I with 702 yards and a league-best 10 rushing touchdowns in only seven games played. Rosario surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards in a win […]

Pa’e lifts Nanakuli to first volleyball crown

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2017

Pearl City came prepared to win a championship. The Chargers’ biggest obstacle turned out to be a 5-foot-6 back row beast of a libero. Nanakuli sophomore Ka‘anela Pa‘e put as much energy into her defensive craftsmanship as she did with her pre-game introduction dance. With music piping through the sound system during warmups and pre-game, Pa‘e and several of her teammates did their dance moves. Those moves were pretty good, but they paled in comparison with their defensive prowess in […]

Relentless defense sparks Moanalua to title

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2017

For the powerful Kapolei Hurricanes, it may have felt like defeat by a thousand cuts. No matter how many heavy balls the ‘Canes sent toward Moanalua’s side of the court, Na Menehune prevailed most of the night with Hula Crisostomo and Tayli Ikenaga leading the back-row resistance. The result: Kapolei took 123 swings, had 18 hitting errors and hit just .154 as Moanalua took the OIA Division I championship match 25-20, 27-25, 25-15 before a loud gathering of about 3,000 […]

Le Jardin’s Natalie Piper attempted to put down a kill past Damien’s Mikeila Beazley (21) and Julia Tilton in a game on Tuesday. The

Le Jardin wins its first ILH girls volleyball title

By Kyle Sakamoto on October 18, 2017

Despite winning its first state championship last season, Le Jardin had never won an ILH title in girls volleyball. After losing to Damien in five sets on Tuesday in their first opportunity , the Bulldogs bounced back to take home the league title with a 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21 victory over the host Monarchs on Wednesday to end the ILH double-elimination tournament. “Another first for us, right?” Le Jardin coach Lee Lamb said. “We’re just trying to check off the […]

Upsets uncommon in OIA semifinals

By Jerry Campany on October 18, 2017

Conventional wisdom will tell you that Friday night’s OIA football semifinals are a mere formality before division champions Mililani and Kahuku play for the OIA championship. Upsets are rare in the Final Four, but they do happen. Farrington took down Kapolei last year for the first semifinal upset in five years. There is a level of comfort for the favorites, though, as a division winner hasn’t made it to the semifinals and failed to make states since Mililani in 2003 […]

Pupule ballot: Voters raise Waipahu’s black flag

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2017

The Black Flag is waving on the castle of Star-Advertiser Football Top 10, and that means another team has been bumped out. Unless there has been a tie. Waipahu, Damien, Lahainaluna, all worthy teams this season and especially for Damien in recent years, and Lahainaluna over the course of decades, that have been overlooked due to Division II designation/choice. I lamented almost endlessly last week about Damien’s strategic approach and defeat, and whatever the case, voters penalized the Monarchs by […]

‘Iolani’s Genovia will miss state tournament

By Billy Hull on October 18, 2017

Last Friday at Kozuki Stadium, ‘Iolani slotback Justin Genovia joined a special group. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior caught a 7-yard pass over the middle against St. Francis to make him the ninth player ever on Oahu to record 2,000 career receiving yards. That accomplishment was quickly overshadowed when Genovia struggled to get up after taking a hit in the middle of the field. Genovia, the Raiders’ leading receiver this season with 869 yards and seven touchdowns on 83 receptions, suffered […]
