HAWAII GROWN: Ta’amu throws for 368 yards in loss

By Nick Abramo on October 28, 2017

Jordan Ta’amu completed 20 of 30 passes for 368 yards in his debut as the Ole Miss starting quarterback Saturday. Ta’amu, a 2015 Pearl City graduate, did not have a touchdown pass and he threw one interception in a 38-37 SEC loss to Arkansas. Ta’amu also rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns. The Razorbacks’ Connor Limpert kicked a 34-yard field goal with four seconds left to deny the Rebels and finish off a comeback from a 24-point deficit. Ta’amu, […]

‘Iolani is back to defend its crown

By Paul Honda on October 28, 2017

Cinderella is wearing red to the big dance. Only, this Cinderella almost didn’t make it there. In fact, less than two weeks ago, the very young ‘Iolani Raiders were on the verge of playoff elimination, on the brink of fading away just one year after winning the state title. The Interscholastic League of Honolulu playoffs, in all its madness and drama, easily could have spewed out top-five teams Maryknoll or Punahou to accompany champion Kamehameha to the state championships. Instead, […]

Damien earns return trip to Kauai

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 27, 2017

Marcus Faufata-Pedrina conceded he’ll probably be a bit sore when he reports for Damien’s customary Saturday practice following a Friday game. But the Monarchs’ day-after workout will be something of a reward in itself for the senior quarterback. “We wanted to practice tomorrow and keep our season going,” Faufata-Pedrina said as his teammates celebrated the Monarchs’ 13-12 win over St. Francis and a third straight ILH Division II championship Friday night at Aloha Stadium. One point was the difference in […]

ILH D-II volleyball is really something

By Nick Abramo on October 27, 2017

The back-and-forth Hawaii Baptist and Damien match Friday night was more evidence that the Interscholastic League of Honolulu is a really special place for volleyball. Even after you get past the intense Division I teams (Kamehameha, ‘Iolani, Punahou and Maryknoll) that go at it in close races every year, you’ve got three big wheels in Division II. Well, for now, let’s say Le Jardin, the defending D-II state champion and the ILH champion this year, is the biggest of the […]

Mastering the grind: Kamehameha back in finals

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2017

After 20 state championships in girls volleyball, including eight with Chris Blake steering the ship, some fundamental principles haven’t changed. Blake saw his Warriors methodically, patiently delete OIA powerhouse Kapolei from the title chase on Friday night with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 sweep at sultry McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. There were no bells and whistles, nothing cute tactically for Kamehameha (14-2). Just solid, on-the-move adjusting against a big, powerful Kapolei squad that reached the OIA finals. “Kapolei’s a solid team […]

Heartbreaking loss ends St. Francis’ best season ever

By Christian Shimabuku on October 27, 2017

A stoic Kip Akana walked out of Aloha Stadium after his St. Francis team lost 13-12 to Damien in the ILH Division II championship game on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. It’s the second consecutive year the Saints have ended their season with a one-possession loss to the Monarchs in the ILH final. Akana, in his third year as head coach, headed toward the busses in a stunned silence. It started to set in that the season was over, and […]

Defending state champion Iolani and Kamehameha will meet in tomorrow’s HHSAA state girls volleyball championship in a rematch from last year. The Warriors have been in 15 straight state finals and the state championship has been an all-ILH affair every year since 2002. Here is a glance at every Division I state championship match: Division I 2016: Iolani 3, Kamehameha 1 26-24, 21-25, 25-18, 25-14 Freshman Elena Oglivie buried 23 kills and junior Saige Kaahaaina-Torres added 22 as the Raiders […]
