The story that passed through the press box after the game at Aloha Stadium is that UH passing-game coordinator and wide […]

Kahuku, Saint Louis advance to another showdown

By Nick Abramo on November 11, 2017

One player was just trying to circle around and get open. His opponent was trying to defend the run before switching gears to defend the pass. It was during one of two highly entertaining games of state Division I-Open semifinal football Friday night at Aloha Stadium, and the outcome of this one, the opener, was hanging in the balance as another player, Kahuku quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, scrambled around. Maiava saw receiver Duke Heffernan alone in the middle of the end […]

Mililani’s quest: So close, yet so far

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2017

Last week, it was Kahuku in the Oahu Interscholastic Association title game. This week, it was defending state champion Saint Louis. For a second week in a row, the Mililani Trojans played unsurpassed football. Then, a mighty foe surpassed them. Mililani roared to a 23-10 lead, then saw Saint Louis ratchet up to a new level. The final score of Saint Louis’ 47-23 victory in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open Division State Championships doesn’t tell the whole […]

Quinn finished with eight receptions for 307 yards and five TDs. He’s also a star on the Crusaders’ track team and constantly proved that he was simply too fast for the Mililani secondary. Kahuku returns to title game with comeback win

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 10, 2017

When Sol-Jay Maiava was struggling on Friday night — whether with his command or his ankle — the Kahuku quarterback’s focus turned to family. “i just thought of my mom, that’s about it,” Maiava said. A week after Maiava threw a game-winning touchdown late in a shootout victory over Mililani in the OIA Division I championship game, the sophomore’s radar appeared misaligned for much of Friday’s state tournament semifinal matchup with Waianae. He completed seven of his first 31 pass […]
