The 6-foot-7, 310-pound Buelow now has 14 offers total, including seven from the Pac-12 (Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah, Washington, Washington State). Almont-Done to Menehune: ‘This is your moment’

By Paul Honda on January 23, 2018

Tani Almont-Done is a communicator. A heck of a communicator. It was that talent that helped Radford capture an OIA Division II girls basketball championship in 2011. She stepped down after that season, then emerged a few seasons later at nearby Moanalua. The effect has been about connection. In Delylah Sanerivi, a volleyball/basketball standout, she has a poised, tough and consistent producer in the paint. The 5-foot-10 senior had 21 points and 16 rebounds in her biggest game to date, […]

By Nick Abramo on January 22, 2018

Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director Chris Chun confirmed Monday night that the state football tournament will have two more Oahu Interscholastic Association teams next season. That is based on Chun’s knowledge that the OIA will run the 2018 season in three divisions instead of two, a move that had been anticipated since the fall of 2017. Chun said Monday that the OIA confirmed to him after the last HHSAA football committee meeting earlier this month that it would […]

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2018

There was more than the falling of one giant tree in this jungle. Maryknoll knocked off No. 2 Kamehameha and No. 1 Punahou in a three-day span this week. Today, coaches and media rewarded the Spartans with a No. 1 ranking in the new Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. Maryknoll received six of the 10 first-place votes. This also means that Maryknoll has the top ranking in both boys and girls basketball polls for the first time in a decade. […]

Kamehameha faces elimination in ILH playoffs

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2018

The ILH playoffs are humming and Kamehameha is in potential elimination mode. The Warriors will travel to ‘Iolani today in second-round action of the playoff tournament. A win by Kamehameha plus a win by Maryknoll against Sacred Hearts would be good news for the Warriors. Since Kamehameha lost to ‘Iolani in a tie-breaker game for second place in the regular-season standings on Thursday, the Warriors need a first- or possibly second-place finish in the league playoffs to claim the league’s […]

Kahuku/Moanalua, Mililani/Kalani: OIA title up for grabs

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2018

Nitty-gritty time is here in girls basketball. In the OIA, the East has been the beast with three of the four teams in the semifinal round. Tonight at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium, East 1 Kahuku takes on East 3 Moanalua, the latter being the hottest team — with the biggest wins — of the past two weeks. Moanalua knocked off frontrunners Kahuku and Kalani in back-to-back games. Moanalua (15-9, 7-3 OIA East) eliminated West 6 Kapolei 38-22 on Tuesday and […]

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2018

The trees swayed, but the forest remains the domain of the Lady Spartans. Maryknoll collected every first-place vote from coaches and media to remain locked at No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 on Monday. The Lady Spartans (24-2) continued their dominance in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play with wins over Sacred Hearts and ‘Iolani. Maryknoll completed the regular season 10-0 and has sealed a berth in the state tournament. They have been so dominant, voters have made […]
