Kaimuki forfeits football opener against Radford

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2021

The football season opener between Kaimuki and Radford has been forfeited by Kaimuki. The game had been scheduled for Saturday at Farrington’s Skippa Diaz Stadium. OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka confirmed that a low number of eligible players is the reason for the forfeiture. In years past, the league generally has used 25 as a threshold number for small rosters. “They’re going to be fine,” Tanaka said. “It’s just this week.” New coach Reid Yoshikawa stepped in after the school […]

Jordan Helle on AJ Bianco: ‘He reminds me of Andrew Manley’

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2021

AJ Bianco seems so familiar. Tall, strong and composed in the pocket. Able to lead through adversity. Self-motivated. Self-analyzing. Always getting better. The Saint Louis quarterback is featured in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior is starting this fall for the first time, and four games in, his coaches and former coaches-turned-analysts have observed a consistent growth by the two-sport standout. Perhaps one of the most comparable of quarterbacks past is Jordan Helle, who led Baldwin during its dynasty […]

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2021

Up front, it is all business for Kahuku. Coming into a scrimmage with No. 1-ranked Kamehameha, two offensive linemen went down with injuries. Next man up. Kahuku scored five touchdowns in five series during the modified scrimmage, mixing rollouts and two-back, shotgun power runs in a display of balance. Kamehameha played reserves from start to finish. The Warriors’ bye week was an opportunity to get some action for both those second- and third-stringers, while the visiting Red Raiders enjoyed their […]

Kamehameha junior Devin Kahahawai came home on Saturday after a memorable stretch with the team in Mexico. “I do miss playing international, that was an awesome experience. It has its perks, but it’s nice to be home, I can say that for sure. I’m glad to be back with my team,” the 6-foot-2 outside hitter said. While she was gone, Kamehameha was 2-2 in ILH play against […]
