Q&A: ‘Iolani’s record-breaking kicker, Mika Makekau

By Paul Honda on October 2, 2018

The fact is simple enough. Mika Makekau is the new record holder for the longest field goal by a girl in state history. Her 44-yard FG was one of three successful kicks in a 30-19 win over Damien two weeks ago. The win is key to ‘Iolani’s post-season qualifying chances, and she might get a shot at the national girls record of 48 yards before her prep career is done. Makekau, younger sister of current Navy starting wide receiver Keoni-Kordell […]

Moanalua’s Paleafei is incognito no more

By Nick Abramo on October 1, 2018

Moanalua senior Natasha Paleafei made sure her hair was under her helmet so as to not give her away. But that effort to blend in isn’t going work any more. Her cover is blown. Paleafei is the starting right guard for No. 8 Moanalua, and the fact that she’s a girl is the only thing that is not quite blending. Ability-wise, she is right there on par with her offensive linemates, according to Na Menehune coach Savaii Eselu. Paleafei, a […]

Mililani ends Kahuku’s 51-game home win streak

By Paul Honda on September 29, 2018

There are few streaks that never end. It’s just that Kahuku’s 51-game home winning streak seemed unbreakable. Omnipotent. It carried an aura of its own, and the invincibility permeated life on the North Shore. That came to a halt on Saturday night with a resounding 38-10 loss to No. 4 Mililani (6-2, 4-0 OIA Open). No. 2 Kahuku (4-2, 1-1) simply couldn’t get access to the state’s all-time career record holder in passing yardage, Dillon Gabriel. The southpaw passed for […]
