Good vibrations: Kaiser captures OIA D-II title

By Nick Abramo on October 17, 2018

Kaiser athletics has had its share of controversy in the past few years. But the bad mojo is fading away. On Wednesday night at the McKinley gym, the school had a feel-good moment when the Cougars girls volleyball team locked up the OIA Division II championship with a 26-28, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 victory over Leilehua. “This is fantastic for these girls and fantastic for Kaiser,” Cougars coach Kainoa Downing said. “Kaiser has struggled in sports the last couple of years. […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Nanakuli Golden Hawks

By Jerry Campany on October 17, 2018

The Nanakuli Golden Hawks had their second winless season in three years and came into this season 1-15 in the previous two years, but the small country school was placed in Division I in the new three-tier alliance. It hasn’t worked out for the proud fan base in the valley, as Nanakuli went 0-10 for the second time in program history and hit a low with one victory in three years. Nanakuli averaged 8.3 points per game, its lowest output […]

Molokai to Hana commute is a beaut

By Nick Abramo on October 17, 2018

Molokai is sitting pretty in the MIL 8-man football race, having clinched at least a share of the championship. The Farmers (6-1, 5-1) did that with a 51-40 home victory over Lanai on Oct. 6. This latest title comes on the heels of three undisputed titles in a row from 2015 to 2017. But it ain’t easy being the road team, and it is a little harder for Molokai than it is for Lanai, since the latter is closer to […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Damien Monarchs

By Jerry Campany on October 17, 2018

The only difference between the 2017 and 2018 Damien Monarchs football teams appears to be the fewer number of victories. The Monarchs generated three fewer points per game and allowed nearly the same amount of points as a year ago, but the effort turned from 10 wins last year to five this season. Damien averaged 20 points per game but that number has dropped a little bit in each of the last three years. The defense had a hand in […]

No. 2 ‘Iolani finally gets the best of No. 1 Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2018

In the big picture, the Goliath that is Kamehameha’s girls volleyball program has felt the sting of defeat only rarely. And often enough, the Warriors responded with a renewed energy, the kind that they witnessed from ‘Iolani on Tuesday night. Unbeaten, top-ranked Kamehameha seemingly had another ILH championship wrapped up after two sets, and then the visiting, No. 2-ranked Raiders played lights-out for a stunning 23-25, 14-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-11 win at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. Elena Oglivie was spectacular from every […]

Mid-Pacific forces playoff for ILH D-II title

By Jerry Campany on October 16, 2018

Thursday’s ILH Division II championship volleyball match between Damien and Mid-Pacific has been four years in the making. The Owls swept the Monarchs 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 on Tuesday to force the deciding match at 6 p.m. at Damien’s gym, and one of them is assured of winning its first-ever ILH crown and the seeded state berth that comes with it. But positioning at states can wait, both teams want the gold now. “For us the seeding doesn’t matter more than […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Kalaheo Mustangs

By Jerry Campany on October 16, 2018

The Kalaheo Mustangs turned in their pads early, but in many ways 2018 marked another season of improvement. The Mustangs earned three wins for the first time since Darrell Poole‘s inaugural season in 2012 and have upped their win total for three years in a row, the first time that has happened since 2006-2008 under Chris Mellor, capped by Kalaheo’s last really good team that started 6-0 and finished 7-3 following back-to-back losses to Campbell. Poole’s 2018 bunch scored only […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Kalani Falcons

By Jerry Campany on October 16, 2018

Scott Melemai‘s Kalani Falcons took a step back in 2018, failing to win more than two games for the first time since 2010 under longtime mentor Greg Taguchi. The Falcons struggled mightily to put points on the board, averaging only 5.3 per game after raising that number to 26.3 last season. They were shut out six times, the most since the dark days of 2001, and it was the first time since 2007 the Falcons failed to average at least […]
