CLOSING THE BOOK: Kamehameha Warriors

By Billy Hull on October 23, 2018

The Kamehameha Warriors again came up just short of finishing .500 for the first time under third-year head coach Abu Ma’afala, and the numbers make it pretty clear where they need to get better in order to contend. On defense, Ma’afala has made a huge difference since replacing Doug Cosbie prior to the start of the 2016 season. Kamehameha allowed 30.2 points per game against ILH competition in Cosbie’s final year and 31.2 points per game in Ma’afala’s first year. […]

Mid-Pacific sweeps state air riflery titles

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2018

If it was easy, it would happen all the time. There have been only four previous programs to win both girls and boys team titles at the Civilian Marksmanship Program/HHSAA Air Riflery State Championships. Mid-Pacific became the fifth on Tuesday, capturing the boys and girls team crowns today at Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. MPI’s boys took first with a score of 2,144, led by Anthony Umemoto (544), Michael Tam (536), Brandon Lum (532) and Christian Loo (532). Mid-Pacific won its […]

Kalaheo’s Marr surprises field for Air Riflery state title

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2018

At Kalaheo, air riflery doubles, sort of, as a way to sweat out any toxins. The Mustangs practice in the wrestling room, which has no windows. “It’s a sauna,” longtime co-head coach Craig Garcia said. The alternative might be to shoot outdoors, but trade winds off the slopes of the picturesque Oneawa Hills aren’t ideal. Madissyn Marr remembers her freshman year, when the team actually practiced outside. “It was good for our wind-shooting skills,” said Marr, smiling under her blue-dyed […]

Lanai shares 8-man title; Baldwin, Maui to play off

By Nick Abramo on October 23, 2018

Lanai has been back in business playing football for five seasons, and now the Pine Lads are champions of the MIL 8-man league. The Pine Lads (5-2, 5-1) defeated Seabury Hall 78-6 at home on Saturday to move into a first-place tie and a share of the league championship with Molokai (6-1, 5-1). No playoffs were scheduled this season for the four-team league. Lanai brought football back in 2014 after dropping it at the end of the 1953 season. The […]

HAWAII GROWN: Milton’s status for next game unknown

By Billy Hull on October 23, 2018

UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton snapped a streak of 27 consecutive starts for the Knights when he was held out of Saturday’s 37-10 win over East Carolina. Milton’s absence was a shock to the ESPN crew televising the game as well as local media in Orlando. Knights coach Josh Heupel said after the game that the decision was made to rest the 2016 Mililani alumnus following pregame warmups for “overall health” reasons. On a Monday teleconference call, Heupel was asked if […]

VIDEO Q&A: ILH champ Adam Harder of Hanalani

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2018

Every day, every year, Adam Harder strives to get better. He and his teammates at Hanalani are all in and have been through the off-season and cross country season. The results are impressive for a school with just 300 students from grades 7 through 12. Harder is undefeated this fall, including first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships last weekend. As a junior, leads a group of Royals who have a chance to win the HHSAA Division II […]

Petticord’s defense is D-I level for ‘Iolani

By Nick Abramo on October 22, 2018

Sasha Petticord is a skillful volleyball player who will likely be playing at a Division I college next year. Firing away for kills and diving for digs is only part of the equation for her, though. She is the girl up front and in the middle for the second-ranked ‘Iolani Raiders and she is defensive-minded. Sure, the blocks and kills come for points, but that’s not her forte. At 6-foot-2, Petticord is in the way of opposing hitters. She was […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Radford Rams

By Jerry Campany on October 22, 2018

The Radford Rams are inching forward one win at a time. The Rams went 2-8 this year, twice as many as they earned in 2017 following a winless season in Lon Passos‘ debut in 2016. The numbers are small, but the feat is large as the last time the Rams improved their win total for three straight years was from 2003-2005 in Fred Salanoa‘s first three years at the helm. They have never done it four years straight and it […]
