STATE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT: All but 2 spots filled

By Nick Abramo on October 28, 2018

Twelve of the 14 state football tournament spots have been clinched. Seven teams — No. 1 Saint Louis, No. 3 Mililani, No. 5 Kahuku, Hilo, Waipahu, Kamehameha-Hawaii and Kapaa — punched their ticket into states with victories last weekend. Five teams — No. 6 Lahainaluna, No. 7 ‘Iolani, Roosevelt, Kaimuki Pac-Five — previously wrapped up state spots. No. 5 Campbell squares off against Farrington on Friday in the OIA Open third-place game for the last state Open Division slot. On […]

Hilo, Kapaa, KS-Hawaii clinch; Ka’u takes title

By Nick Abramo on October 28, 2018

Hilo (8-1), by virtue of its 25-11 playoff victory over Kealakehe at Wong Stadium on Friday, wrapped up the BIIF D-I championship and earned a berth as the defending champion in the Division I state tournament. HHSAA D-I brackets are expected to be released soon. All state D-I berths are set except the MIL spot, which will be determined on Friday, Nov. 2, in a game between MIL D-I first-round winner Maui (4-5) and second-round champ Baldwin (3-6). The other […]

Lahainaluna and Kapaa get top D-II seeds

By Nick Abramo on October 28, 2018

MIL champion Lahainaluna and KIF champion Kapaa were awarded the top two Division II seeds in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships. The top-seeded Lunas (9-0), who are the defending D-II state champions, and second-seeded Warriors (6-2) get a bye in the first round and host a game in the second round. Two first-round games will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 — Pac-Five (4-4) at fourth-seeded OIA champion Roosevelt (10-2), and Kaimuki (8-3) at third-seeded BIIF champion Kamehameha-Hawaii. […]

Ron Lee: Crusader offense ‘sloppy’, lots of work ahead

By Paul Honda on October 28, 2018

Ron Lee will enjoy a day or so to unwind and refresh. But when Monday gets here, the longtime offensive coordinator will be ready to get back to work with the Saint Louis offense. The top-ranked Crusaders pulled away for a 45-21 win over No. 2 Punahou on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium in the ILH Open championship game. Despite 494 yards of total offense, the run-and-shoot guru wasn’t 100-percent satisfied. “Besides winning, we were very sloppy,” Lee said. “A […]

Six takeaways fuel Saint Louis to another ILH title

By Paul Honda on October 28, 2018

It was almost enough, even by Cal Lee’s almost unreachable standards, that Saint Louis had limited a potent Punahou offense to a single touchdown by halftime. Top-ranked Saint Louis went on to capture the ILH Open championship with a 45-21 victory over No. 2 Punahou at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night. Punahou was limited to 16 rushing yards on 13 carries, eschewing the run in favor of five-wide sets. “We’re just listening to Coach, trusting in the plays he was […]

Trip to OIA title game cures Mililani’s York

By Kyle Sakamoto on October 28, 2018

Mililani coach Rod York was feeling a bit under the weather heading into Saturday’s game against Farrington. Perhaps a convincing victory and spot in the OIA Open Division final will help him on the road to recovery. Dillon Gabriel completed 14 of 30 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns and Mililani’s defense allowed only 17 total yards in the first half of a 47-7 victory over visiting Farrington. “The defense always sets it up of us,” said York, who […]

‘Iolani, Sacred Hearts finish off volleyball shockers

By Nick Abramo on October 27, 2018

Underdogs ‘Iolani and Sacred Hearts gave the volleyball favorites a Halloween-time trick Saturday night at the Blaisdell Arena. It was spook-tacular for the Division I and II losers, Kamehameha and Le Jardin. In the second match of the night, the second-ranked Raiders took down top-seeded Kamehameha in three sets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18. A microcosmic analogy would be of a left-side hitter winding up seven times on the same rally and getting roofed five times and dug up once before the […]

Format leaves No. 2 Punahou out of the state tournament

By Christian Shimabuku on October 27, 2018

Saturday night’s ILH Open Division title clash between No. 1 Saint Louis and No. 2 Punahou at Aloha Stadium had all the makings of a high-stakes matchup. Perhaps too high, as the loser would have its season automatically end in October. After a 45-21 win for the Crusaders, it was the Buffanblu who suffered a season-ending loss despite finishing with a 7-3 record in the first season of Open Division play. They are also the No. 2-ranked team in the […]
