Q&A: Kui Kahooilihala on veering Roosevelt to title

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2018

Timing can be everything. Kui Kahooilihala understands this well. The longtime assistant coach saw Roosevelt often overachieve to keep up with the massive powerhouse teams of the OIA East for years. By the time he was asked to apply for the head coaching position, Kahooilihala did it more out of compliance with his friends than anything. Three years since being hired to guide the program, Kahooilihala not only turned the program back into a winner, but Roosevelt (11-1) won the […]

Young Spartans rout Lunas; ‘Iolani rides Wu’s hot shooting

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2018

The hottest ticket in town was at Aloha Stadium today, where Bruno Mars played to a sellout audience on day one of his three-day, tour-closing act. The hottest performance, though, may have been at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. Maryknoll’s band of underclassmen swarmed all over the Maui Interscholastic League’s dynastic program, Lahainaluna, for a 71-53 victory in the opening contest at the Matsumoto Law Group McKinley Black and Gold Classic. That was followed by a scintillating effort from Taylor Wu, […]

Q&A: Kip Botelho on Pac-Five’s golden opportunity

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2018

There were many years over the span of Kip Botelho’s career as a head coach when Pac-Five showed again and again that competition with the OIA’s mid-level teams was very good. Some preseasons, Pac-Five went 2-2 against some good public-school programs. Once in awhile, the Wolfpack went 2-1 or 3-1. Then, ILH play would begin, and it was a mighty mismatclh against deeper, bigger programs that, in today’s era, are in Open Division. This year, Pac-Five is 4-4, had a […]

Q&A: Drummondo chats about Hilo’s title defense

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2018

Winning a state championship takes a lot of work, planning and just a bit of luck when it comes to injuries. Defending a state title is rarely easier. The Hilo Vikings, 8-1 and ranked No. 9 in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10, begin their quest with a home game against MIL champion Maui. The game won’t be at the Viks’ usual home turf at Dr. Francis Wong Stadium. Instead, it will be on the green grass of Keaau High School […]

31 years later, Pac-Five QB Padello wishes team best

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2018

The last time Pac-Five played in the postseason, it was 1987. Nov. 27, to be exact. The runners-up of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Oahu Interscholastic Association met at Aloha Stadium in a preliminary battle before the Oahu Prep Bowl. Led by quarterback Kimo Padello, Pac-Five stunned Kailua 37-14. If the name sounds familiar, he is the father of Hawaii defensive ends Kaimana and KK Padello. Kimo Padello is a busy man with a busy family. Mention Nov. 27 […]

Q&A: Carvalho on Waipahu-‘Iolani state tourney clash

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2018

Reigning in Division II was a dream for the Waipahu Marauders. One year after taking the throne in Oahu Interscholastic Association D-II, the Marauders hoisted their black flag on the OIA D-I landscape. It is a rare D-II/D-I back-to-back title trek, but coach Bryson Carvalho says the notion of moving all the way up to Open Division is still a few years off. Waipahu (8-4) hosts ‘Iolani on Friday in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. […]

Q&A: ‘Iolani’s Wendell Look on D-I state semifinal

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2018

The seventh-ranked ‘Iolani Raiders (8-2) are no strangers to state-tournament football. Waipahu? The pendulum has swung back up in recent seasons. The two teams square off on Friday at Waipahu’s Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex in a rematch of a week-2 battle. That game was dominated at ‘Iolani, 55-14, but Raiders coach Wendell Look says the circumstances and environment are much different this time. Winning a semifinal game on another team’s home turf in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships […]

By Billy Hull on November 8, 2018

St. Francis senior Siotame Haunga has been named a Polynesian Bowl All Star. Haunga, who is a 6-foot-1, 280-pound offensive lineman, is the third player from St. Francis ever to be named to the Polynesian Bowl, joining Wembley Mailei and Scott McLeod, who both played in last year’s game. His selection makes St. Francis the 10th different school to have at least one player selected to the annual high school football all-star game, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at […]
