Tommy Musto’s unique route to the Portland Pilots

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2021

One of the most unusual letter-of-intent signing stories belongs to Tommy Musto, a soccer player who signed with the University of Portland. He is a student at Hawaii Technology School, but never played in high school. Instead, he plays midfielder with the Rush Hawaii soccer club on Oahu, coached by Arian Hoxha. Musto trains at his home base in Upcountry Maui with his father, Carl. A key to the process is being proactive. “I think it is more important to […]

By Paul Honda on November 17, 2021

Two years ago, it was Punahou that was the runner-up from the ILH playing in the opening round of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships. Kamehameha drew the top seed, swept Kapolei and Moanalua, then met Punahou in the final. The Warriors won in four sets for their second title in a three-year span. In all, that made it 10 state championships under coach Chris Blake. Since 2019, only the ILH played a regular season, in the spring […]

There is a certain kind of person who makes deliveries. A giver to the end and beyond. Someone who keeps watch and brings the goods. Just don’t be late. Be on point. For the ‘Iolani girls volleyball team, that person is Mokihana Tufono. The 5-foot-10 senior setter with a versatile array of skills — she had 16 kills, 18 assists and two blocks against Kamehameha last week — brings the will with the skill. No. 1 Kahuku wins one for the late David Vimahi

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2021

The loss of coach David Vimahi could have stonewalled the Kahuku Red Raiders. Instead, the top-ranked football team in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 rose to the challenge with a 55-20 victory over No. 3 Mililani on Saturday night at John Kauinana Stadium. At 5-0, Big Red is alone atop the OIA Open Division standings. Mililani took its first loss after three wins. The visiting team in white uniforms and red helmets spoiled Mililani’s homecoming, but it wasn’t easy despite […]

Stout defense leads Aiea in key win over Castle

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2021

Championship material, maybe. At 2-1 in OIA Division I, title town is a little less distant for Aiea. After a 43-21 win over Castle on Friday, Na Alii can reliably count on two things that the late, great Dick Tomey valued. Special teams. Defense. All the offensive fireworks that came in the second half — Aiea led 13-7 at the break — were a relief to the 300 or so fans clad in forest green and white at Radford’s James […]

Washington awaits Kamehameha catcher Beau Sylvester

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2021

The odds of three homegrown baseball prospects signing with the Washington Huskies baseball team are long enough. Even longer, catcher Beau Sylvester of Kamehameha, shortstop Aiva Arquette of Saint Louis and pitcher Zach Tenn of ‘Iolani all hail from the 96734. From Kailua to Seattle they shall travel in 2023. Imagine what that trio would have done if they had stayed home and played high school baseball for the Surfriders. “That would be scary,” Sylvester said. “We are childhood friends. […]
