CLOSING THE BOOK: Kaimuki Bulldogs

By Jerry Campany on November 22, 2018

It’s time to start considering whether David Tautofi is the best coach the Kaimuki Bulldogs have ever had. After his fourth season, Tautofi is the only coach to put four winning seasons together and has compiled a 27-16 record to nuzzle up against Lowell Cambra (36-37-1) as the second-winningest coach in Kaimuki history. Tautofi took it to the next level this year, winning 10 games for the first time since Clint Onigama‘s squad won 12 in 2010. Tautofi’s boys actually […]

Mililani oozing with spirit heading into finale

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2018

Coach Rod York was oozing with spirit Wednesday night at Mililani’s second-to-last full practice before Saturday’s big game. The vibes he gave off were coming in crystal clear: the Trojans believe they can do what many feel is the impossible. The task at hand is the Open Division finale of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. Mililani (9-2) is considered an underdog against the Saint Louis Crusaders (10-0), the top-ranked team in the state and as high as No. […]

By Christian Shimabuku on November 21, 2018

Faatui Tuitele will be wearing a variety of jerseys in the months to come. But before the recent Washington commit suits up in the 2019 All-American Bowl and Polynesian Bowl before heading to Seattle, one thing’s for sure. By Paul Honda on November 21, 2018

Jake Holtz poured in 24 points and Jydon Hall added 11 from the point as Damien outran Kalaheo 66-57 to capture the Pete Smith Classic championship on Wednesday night. Holtz, a 6-foot-3 junior who plays quarterback for the Monarchs’ football team, was a force in the post and in transition. Trayden Bayudan also chipped in 11 points while Hall controlled the tempo. Hall was instrumental when Kalaheo tried to use fullcourt pressure to rally. The home team trailed 60-40 in […]

Coaches have their say on Baden QB-1 ball

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2018

The Baden QB-1 is the official ball of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships, and it gets mixed reviews from the coaches. Two of the six coaches in Saturday’s championship tripleheader are fine with it, one coach does Jedi mind tricks in order for his team to go with the flow and “love” it, two others have serious problems with it and the other coach gives it a mixed review. From the point of view of a handful of […]

de Laura’s numbers compare with Cordeiro, Tua, Mariota

By Paul Honda on November 21, 2018

It’s not a perfect mission every time out, but even as a first-year starting quarterback, Saint Louis’ Jayden de Laura is truly producing at an extraordinary level. The young de Laura occasionally forces plays, but with 2,117 passing yards, 19 TDs and a modest eight picks, he is having an brilliant season with the best completion rate (68.8 percent) and passer rating (191.55). Those numbers are easily comparable to the first-starting season statistics of Chevan Cordeiro (2017), Tua Tagovailoa (’14) […]

Cal Lee’s Achilles’ heel proves to be his Achilles

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2018

Almost from the time Cal Lee decided to become a coach of football players nearly a half-century ago, his opponents have been trying to find the soft spot in his armor. Rarely have they actually done it. The last time Lee lost a meaningful game was in 2015 to the Kahuku Red Raiders and their ram-rodding elephant package. Lee is on the verge of winning a third straight top-tier championship, and that’s hard to do at any level. But it […]

By Jerry Campany on November 21, 2018

The Campbell Sabers put together their third straight winning season and made it to the state tournament for the first time since 2016 before their loss to Mililani’s machine. Darren Johnson finished his second year at the school with a 15-10 record, matching the winning percentage of predecessors Amosa Amosa and Tumoana Kenessey. They won eight games for the first time since Amosa won nine in 2013. The Sabers took their share of beatings in the new Open Division, causing […]
