Iolani’s Oglivie returns to the top in Hawaii

By Jerry Campany on December 2, 2018

Iolani doesn’t win the state title every year, but recently it has boasted of the best player. Elena Oglivie was selected as the Star-Advertiser’s Player of the Year on Sunday, adding to the honor she picked up two years ago as a freshman. That gives the Raiders the player of the year for four straight seasons, with Saige Ka’aha’aina-Torres taking it last year and Bailey Choy starting the run with 2015’s top honor. The last time a program did that […]

3 days, 6 games later, Waiakea emerges a better team

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2018

Six games in three days, no problem for the Waiakea Warriors. Though other neighbor island teams like Lahainaluna had done this on a regular basis, No. 7-ranked Waiakea adopted this scripted bit of madness for the first time this week. By game six, in the title matchup with Sacred Hearts at the SHA Invitational, the Warriors played some of their best basketball in the second half. Waiakea pulled away from No. 10 Sacred Hearts for a 64-51 win. “I’m not […]

Injured Ng vows to ‘come back better and stronger’

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2018

Time is on the Saints’ side. That is the element crucial to a season like no other. With a 53-37 loss to ‘Iolani in the title game of the Surfrider Holiday Hoops Classic, St. Francis (6-2) scored less than 60 points for the first time in six preseason games. ‘Iolani’s relentless, fullcourt man-to-man defense brought plenty of energy from its deep roster. But the Saints will need time to figure out ways to score during busy weeks in both nonconference […]

Patience, conditioning give ‘Iolani a championship edge

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2018

The ‘Iolani Raiders are just a little more patient than most teams. Their timing, though, is just right. Frank Felix dropped three first-half 3-point bombs and finished with 17 points as ‘Iolani defeated St. Francis 53-37 in the final of the Surfrider Holiday Hoops Classic on Saturday night. Kawika Lee added 13 points, including 6-for-6 shooting at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Another returnee, Noah Bumanglag, hit both of his 3-pointers in the first half and finished with […]

Defend Kalihi: Govs off to 2-1 start

By Paul Honda on December 1, 2018

Barely 12 hours removed from a home loss to state-title contender Maryknoll, the Farrington Governors got into defensive mode. The Govs got balanced scoring and plenty of defense in a 45-34 win over Baldwin on Saturday morning. Farrington, which won at Nanakuli 76-59 earlier in the week, is now 2-1 in nonconference play. Three Governors, including three-year letterman Felcris Ahadain, missed the game with injuries. Raefe McEnroe, playing with stitches in his right elbow, had his arm wrapped up but […]

Hoopbook: Lunas edge Kona in 4 OTs, Ng suffers injury

By Paul Honda on December 1, 2018

Friday night isn’t normally a good time for a prep notebook. But Friday, November 30, 2018 was not a typical day. Former President George Bush died. That would be newsworthy enough. The hardwood tales of Hawaii prep hoops added much more. From Oahu to the Big Island, Friday night was mightily memorable. >> Buffanblu bounce back Punahou knocked off the hot Mid-Pacific Owls 64-43 in the championship game of the 20th Annual James Alegre Invitational. Jakob (with a ‘k’) Kimura […]

Punahou bounces back with Alegre title

By Paul Honda on November 30, 2018

Poised and pulverizing. Less than a week after a stunning loss to Division II Damien, the Punahou Buffanblu were in prime mode. Jakob Kimura scored 12 points and Ryder Hsiung also chipped in 12 as Punahou overwhelmed Mid-Pacific 64-43 in the final of the 20th Annual James Alegre Invitational. Defending D-I state champion Punahou (5-1) lost to Damien in the final of Damien’s tournament on Monday, but showed no problem getting the energy level up in the Alegre tourney against […]
