The league took six team championships in the recently-concluded season, adding another in Division II cheerleading which is dominated by females but is classified as a mixed sport. Sacred Hearts took the medium division in cheerleading while Moanalua took the large title. ‘Iolani’s girls were the only ones to win in more than one sport this fall, being crowned champions in bowling and Division I volleyball. Mid-Pacific won in […]

By Paul Honda on December 9, 2018

There’s power in the trenches, which is why the Lady Cougars of Kaiser rely on Stephanie Cannon and Tanya Blakeney. Blakeney, a 5-foot-11 junior, finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cannon, a 5-9 senior, had 11 points and nine rebounds. Shimamoto: Running Raiders could be running even more

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2018

In the aftermath of a 68-62 win over Kailua, ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto thought of one thing. The Running Raiders could do more. No. 4 ‘Iolani is now 5-0 in preseason action. The win over unranked Kailua is a gem worth building on. Kailua is putting together a strong nucleus — 6-foot-6 Isaiah Hopson did not play in last week’s loss to Baldwin — and was coming off a 68-63 win over No. 8 Kamehameha. Shimamoto knew it would be […]

By Paul Honda on December 7, 2018

Kalina Obrey has been on this road before. This time, the evolution of her game is a big reason for No. 5 Kamehameha’s stunning 49-45 win over No. ‘Iolani on Friday night at Father Bray Athletic Center. Obrey pounded inside for 16 points and 14 rebounds, adding two blocks as the Warriors won their season opener in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (6-2 overall). “It means a lot, but it’s still early. We can’t take anything for granted. We’ve still […]

Maybe the highlight of the tournament was Thea Hanato-Smith‘s game-winning bucket to give the Alumni a 44-42 win over Konawaena’s varsity. […]

By Jerry Campany on December 6, 2018

In yet another example of Hawaii being the hotbed of quarterbacks, Gatorade named Dillon Gabriel of Mililani its Hawaii Football Player of the Year on Thursday. Quarterbacks have won the award in eight of the last 10 years, with running backs Vavae Malepeai of Mililani and Punahou’s Steven Lakalaka the only exceptions. In the first 10 years the award was given out, beginning in 1985, no quarterbacks were selected. Jason Gesser of Saint Louis was the first signal-caller so honored, […]

By Nick Abramo on December 6, 2018

Leilehua’s Kelani Corbett is going for her fourth state championship in wrestling in the spring. Not many have done that. But Corbett, ranked No. 1 in the first Hawaii Prep World pound-for-pound rankings of the season, suffered a rare loss in high school competition Saturday in the 155-pound weight class. Corbett lost 5-4 to Kaleinani Makuaole of Waianae, according to Corbett’s coach and father, Kevin Corbett. “It was a good match,” Kevin Corbett said. “She (Makuaole) had a nice takedown […]
