By Paul Honda on December 21, 2018

It was rise and shine at an early hour foe the Mid-Pacific Owls and Hawaii Prep Ka Makani, who tipped off today’s action with a 9 a.m. game. Does anybody really shoot 3s and run the floor well this early? This fourth day of basketball, game No. 3 for all 16 teams in todays consolation and semifinal games, is a true test of endurance mentally and physically. There are great matchups up and down the schedule, very competitive matchups. Some […]

West Linn’s Oreon Courtney soars to ‘Iolani Classic dunk crown

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2018

It took all the energy he had at the end of a long day, but Oreon Courtney summoned up one final, exclamation-point windmill dunk to capture the slam-dunk crown at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic on Thursday night. West Linn had lost a battle with the nation’s sixth-ranked team, La Lumiere, mere minutes before the dunk competition began at roughly 10 p.m. The 6-foot-3 senior had plenty of competition from a deep field that included sky-walking Niven Glover of Oak Ridge […]

For a few minutes, ‘Iolani ruled the prep basketball world

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2018

For minutes — long, heart-stopping minutes — ‘Iolani basketball fans were living the dream. Tough interior defense against the giants of No. 1-ranked Montverde Academy. A motion offense that kept the Eagles occupied, freeing up Frank Felix and Sam Wheeler for 3-point bombs. The Raiders led 6-2, the bleachers were vibrating from extreme decibel levels, and all was well in the Raider basketball galaxy. The frenzy of ‘Iolani’s crowd each time their team made a big stop — Montverde didn’t […]

Oak Ridge’s Niven Glover promises ‘crazy’ in dunk contest

By Paul Honda on December 20, 2018

Between the five teams ranked in the top 30 by MaxPreps and the rest of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic field, there is plenty of expectation for tonight’s slam dunk competition. In fact, this might be the most explosive group of dunkers at the Classic in several years. Last year’s champ was Kamehameha’s Kamren Victorino-Kato, but he was among the few who displayed true creativity, hang time and FORCE. The event is pure fun time for fans, and each year the […]

Hawaii Prep hangs tight with No. 7 Moanalua

By Paul Honda on December 20, 2018

The close losses sting a bit for Hawaii Prep. Coach Fred Wawner doesn’t show the frustration. He is, however, pleased with improvement. Hawaii Prep rallied to get within three points of No. 7 Moanalua before ultimately falling 61-56 on Thursday morning at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. “I like the way we played the last three minutes,” Wawner said. “23 (Geremy Robinson) was tough to stop in transition. He made the difference.” Robinson, a 6-1 sophomore, led Moanalua with 25 points. […]

Faatui Tuitele’s UW signing goes beyond football

By Christian Shimabuku on December 19, 2018

Faatui Tuitele could have attended virtually any school he wanted to. All four participants in this year’s College Football Playoff extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-4, 299-pound defensive tackle. His final five included the likes of traditional powerhouses in Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Texas. So when he announced his commitment to Washington on Nov. 18, the decision went beyond football. It was about finding the place where he felt most at peace. On Wednesday afternoon on campus, Tuitele made […]

Gino Quinones, Ben Scott ready for life in the Pac-12

By Christian Shimabuku on December 19, 2018

Gino Quinones and Ben Scott didn’t have a single FBS offer when both signing periods came and went as juniors. Then on April 16, Hawaii offered both of them. After big summers and stellar senior seasons, each signed pledges to Pac-12 schools on Wednesday at Saint Louis’ campus. Scott, who verbally committed to Arizona State in August, made it official after signing his letter of intent. Quinones signed with Southern California, his dream school, after committing in May. “It’s super […]
