Campbell’s Brock Gooman guts out costly win

By Jerry Campany on February 3, 2019

The title of lineal champion in boxing is reserved for Tyson Fury. In the boys 132-pound weight class in the OIA West, Campbell’s Brock Gooman doesn’t want any part of it. Gooman, who beat Radford’s Logan Leialoha in overtime of the semifinals of a 132-pound semifinal of the OIA West championships at Pearl City on Saturday, failed to defend his title when he was injured. Aiea’s Dante Bareng took the title after Gooman, who left the arena on crutches, was […]

Kamehameha’s Jones-Black is Ohio State-bound

By Nick Abramo on February 3, 2019

She prefers her nickname “Kitty” to her given name “D’awncey.” And she’s been lighting up high school and club soccer fields in Hawaii for quite a while. And the next stop for Kitty Jones-Black in her soccer progression is Ohio State. Going to the Big Ten is not unheard of for a Hawaii high school athlete. But usually, the radar picks it up. Somehow, she avoided all of the hubbub that comes with choosing a college. “Ohio State, I signed […]

Kamehameha keeps Punahou from a sweep at state paddling

By Kyle Sakamoto on February 3, 2019

The Punahou girls repeated as state champion and the Punahou mixed crew ended Seabury Hall’s three-year title reign. The race distance for each division was a half-mile, with a turn at the midway point. The Kamehameha boys finally got the better of Punahou, which swept the ILH season. The league had races of 3-6 miles. “It was a quick transition to go from long distance to short distance,” Manatad said. “The last (ILH) race was 6 miles. Throughout the season […]

Allicia Mahoe makes most of her moment

By Jerry Campany on February 3, 2019

Kapolei’s Allicia Mahoe‘s main event moment was almost as much a success as Ilima-Lei Macfarlane‘s was in December’s mixed martial arts event. Sure, Mahoe was at the OIA West Championships at Pearl City and Macfarlane was defending her Bellator flyweight world title belt at the Blaisdell Arena, but Mahoe is still on her way up. The renowned local power lifter — she can deadlift 220 pounds — won her fourth OIA West championship at 107 pounds with a 9-4 win […]

Kamehameha survives frantic ending for title

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2019

A 1-0 lead in soccer can be precarious, and it was very much so Saturday night. Kamehameha wound up holding off a Campbell offensive flurry over the last 15 minutes for a 1-0 victory in the Division I final of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The upstart Sabers (12-5-1) came oh-so close to tying it up and sending it to overtime. Cheyenne Mattos‘ 35-yard direct kick early in the second half had […]

Campbell girls return to top of West

By Jerry Campany on February 2, 2019

It’s strange to say that the storied Campbell girls wrestling program has turned things around, but their performance at Saturday’s OIA Western Division championships can’t be described as anything else. The Sabers were shut out of champions last year for the first time since 2011. They had an unprecedented five yesterday to match the Kailin Curran-led 2009 squad. And Campbell’s best wrestlers were not even really threatened. Jazmyn Enriquez (97 pounds), Alizeih Villalpando (112) and Heavenli Sardinha (138) all won […]

St. Francis’ Kameron Ng drops 40 on senior night

By Paul Honda on February 2, 2019

Even on a dark and stormy night, the sky can be filled with shooting stars. And even in a game that had no bearing on the standings, Kameron Ng brought the full barrage. On St. Francis’ senior night, Ng scored 40 points, including all 14 of his team’s third-quarter points in a 70-41 win over Mid-Pacific on Saturday night. Ng shot 16-for-31 from the field, including five treys. Lucca Kitashima led MPI with 17 points and Elijah Kahue-Parker added 10 […]

Malia Brost fuels Hawaii Prep’s sixth state title

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2019

Soccer fans on the Big Island already knew what Malia Brost could do. That’s why they were yelling, “Curve it, curve it in,” when Brost lined up for a free kick in the first half at an extremely bad angle. Brost placed the ball about five yards from the end line and about 10 yards from the flag in the deep right corner. Sure enough, she did what the fans were calling for. She left-footed a bender into the top […]
