Isaiah Lee’s 33 points leads Kalani over Campbell

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2019

That was perhaps the quietest 33 points ever, just the way Isaiah Lee and the Kalani Falcons like it. Coming into the playoffs, the Kalani senior guard averaged 16 points per game in OIA East play, a very respectable number for a Falcons team that has a medium-rate pace. But even the patient, deliberate Falcons saw Lee have an occasional scoring outburst with 21 points against Kalaheo and 21 again against Kailua. On Tuesday night, with potential playoff elimination looming, […]

Q&A: Kapolei scholar-athlete Ja’Shon Carter

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2019

When they’re together, the Carter ohana is at its best. A few years ago, eldest son Ja’Shon was a kingpin of the Air Force base bowling alley in Wyoming with a high score of 246. His dad, James Carter Jr., has a high score of 266. In San Antonio, James coached Ja’Shon with the Texas Soldiers AAU club team. The second-level squad, with Ja’Shon at the point, won a tournament in New Orleans. The club promoted Ja’Shon to the elite […]

Hoopbook: Defensive mechanisms; picking a quarterfinal site

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2019

Offense sells tickets. Defense is appreciated by only a few. When Kamehameha suffocated Mililani in a 41-17 takedown on Monday night, only Warrior fans and, perhaps, the spirit of the first king himself enjoyed the way this team advanced in the state tournament. There were no chants of “Defense!” from the bleachers, and there were no defensive analytics printed out, but the Warriors delivered the basketball equivalent of a no-hitter on Day 1 of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. […]

Patriots-like defense helps Kamehameha oust Mililani

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2019

Retracing the steps of the Kamehameha Warriors also means a venture into the voyage of the Mililani Trojans. It was Mililani that met Kalani last week in the semifinals of the OIA Division I playoffs. Mililani went 10-0 in the West, but wasn’t able to break into the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 until Jan. 21, just days after defeating Moanalua in the OIA quarterfinals. The day after cracking the Top 10, the Trojans gave Kalani a major rub before […]

Three different ‘Iolani players scored in the first 18 minutes to lead the host Raiders to a 4-0 win over Kaiser in the opening round of the Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships this afternoon. Lincoln Oishi added a second goal in the 48th minute and Jacob Lee and Brendan Parke also netted goals for ‘Iolani (11-2-1), which is in the quarterfinals for the third straight year. The Raiders will play defending co-state champion and No. 1 seed Hawaii […]

Kapolei enters Top 10 at No. 8

By Paul Honda on February 4, 2019

The journey isn’t over for Kapolei, but the wait for a ranking has been long enough. The panel of coaches and media voted the Hurricanes No. 8 in today’s Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. Kapolei (15-7) completed the regular season with a 10-0 mark in the OIA West and has a bye in Tuesday’s opening round of playoffs. Kapolei’s ascent bumped Farrington from the poll, ending the Governors’ stay after four weeks. With some minor musical chairs, the poll otherwise […]

‘Iolani a unanimous No. 1 as girls basketball state tourney opens

By Paul Honda on February 4, 2019

For an 11th consecutive week, the ‘Iolani Raiders are on the throne with a No. 1 ranking in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. The champions of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu have a bye as the opening round of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championship tips off this afternoon. ‘Iolani (20-6) will face the Maui-Kaiser winner on Thursday in the quarterfinal round at Moanalua. There were some minor changes, like Waiakea dropping from No. 3 into a tie with […]

Hoopbook: A Super Sunday for hoop lifers, Ng brothers

By Paul Honda on February 3, 2019

Super Bowl Sunday is upon America. It is a Sunday, though, that won’t be super for the Ng brothers without another workout. Kameron and Kordel Ng will head to the gym at St. Francis after the Bowl of Superness. They do it all season, spending Sunday afternoon working on their games, a life of basketball year-round, almost entirely seven days a week. “We’ll be here Sunday,” said their father and Saints assistant coach Kekoa Ng. “If not, they get antsy. […]
