By Jerry Campany on February 8, 2019

If the preliminaries of the K. Five different schools won trials on the girls side on Friday and four different schools had the fastest boy in the eight individual events. Kamehameha’s Jaek Horner doubled up in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, threatening MJ Mao of Maryknoll’s state meet record of 54.4 seconds […]

Hoopbook: Big Dance lessons

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2019

After two rounds of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships, we have learned a thing or two. We have learned that there is an unstoppable force in the D-II tourney. Kaye Serapio is tearing it up. The Waimea guard has scored like a Curry, but does much more than just shoot. vs. Waipahu: 23 points — 8-for-13 FG, 7-16 FT, 14 rebounds (including four offensive). Also two assists, two steals, one block. She played all 32 minutes in a 59-48 […]

By Jerry Campany on February 8, 2019

The OIA championships have begun and can be found at Track Wrestling There doesn’t seem to be much drama among the best boys wrestlers, with Kaena Desantos of Leilehua (138), Noah Wusstig of Moanalua (145), Branden Pagurayan of Kapolei (152), Moanalua’s Boltyn Taam (160) and Kalaheo’s Rysan Leong (170) staying put and satisfied with being heavy favorites in their weight classes. Kalaheo’s Rysan Leong looks for OIA breakthrough

By Jerry Campany on February 8, 2019

Kalaheo’s Rysan Leong is not going to be able to sneak up on anyone this year. Leong, No. 2 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings, will attempt to earn his first OIA championship at Leilehua on Saturday. Leong failed in his bid to join Jacob Solomon as Kalaheo’s second OIA champion since 2001 when he bloodied Pearl City’s Makoa Cooper‘s nose and outscored him 7-5 in the third period but fell short 12-7. Leong more than made up for it […]

Seeded champs Waiakea, Lahainaluna, Kahuku eliminated

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2019

Just like that, three of the four seeded league champions are eliminated from the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. BIIF champion Waiakea, the second seed, fell on Thursday night against Kalani. MIL champion and third seed Lahainaluna tumbled against Kamehameha. OIA champion and fourth seed Kahuku fell short against Konawaena. Just like that. And the young Wildcats of Konawaena, a team without a senior, is now two wins away from winning a fifth state title in a row. Friday’s Division […]

Lockdown defense lifts Kamehameha into semis

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2019

The Kamehameha Warriors began the season as a high-pace, high-scoring force. It was week one, preseason action at McKinley in the Matsumoto Law Group Black and Gold Classic, where the Warriors strutted an impressive transition game that Coach Pua Straight wanted her team to embrace. Three months later, the Warriors are still running when the opportunity is there. They just understand what they do best: pound the ball in to the trenches and swarm over opposing shooters from start to […]

‘Iolani tops HPA; shows appetite for more

By Nick Abramo on February 7, 2019

‘Iolani delivered an impressive knockout of defending co-champion and top-seeded Hawaii Prep 2-1 on Thursday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. But there is much more to be done if the Raiders (12-2-1) want to return to the top of the Division I heap in The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships. ‘Iolani has nine D-I state titles under its belt, but the last one came five years ago. Standing in the way are three highly talented teams — […]
