By Paul Honda on February 10, 2019

Wind back the clock two years and change. ‘Iolani has a shot at the state tourney, but needs a win over Kamehameha at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. But injuries and illness wreck the roster. One player is unable to suit up because of pilot lessons. Yes, airplane fly-in-the-sky-for-real lessons. Taylor Wu steps up with 18 points, a magnificent performance by the sophomore, but Kamehameha hangs on for a close win and earns the state berth. ‘Iolani’s season is over. Wind the tape […]

To the winners go the spoils, they say. Taylor Wu knows this well. The ‘Iolani senior came up clutch with her team down against Kamehameha in the final of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships tonight. Moonier’s moment brings Punahou a 21st state title

By Nick Abramo on February 9, 2019

It was one of those oh-oh moments. ‘Iolani was trying to clear the ball from its own end, but it went askew and right to Punahou’s Max Moonier, who trapped it and sent an 18-foot strike into the top left corner. It was the dagger that finally put the Raiders away. The goal seven minutes into overtime by the senior midfielder gave the Buffanblu a 1-0 win in the Division I final of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State […]

HBA outlasts Seabury Hall for D-II state crown

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2019

For two teams that hadn’t met all year, Hawaii Baptist and Seabury Hall sure seemed to have each other’s number. HBA came through with the kind of execution that experienced teams thrive on, outlasting Seabury Hall 43-39 on Saturday night to capture the Division II girls basketball state championship at the Stan Sheriff Center. It was far from easy against a Spartans team that has explosive guards, bigs who rebound and hit 3-pointers, and hardly a senior on the roster. […]

Bucking the expectations

By Brian McInnis on February 9, 2019

In his first diving meet, Ethan Buck placed 19 out of 19. That was a just a couple of months ago. On Saturday, Buck improbably won it all at the HHSAA/K. Mark Takai Swimming and Diving championships. Buck, a water polo player, didn’t get up on a diving board (competitively, at least) for the first time until November. “So my girlfriend (Isabel) does diving, and we started dating, and I wasn’t doing a sport in the winter,” Buck said. “She […]

Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina, Ashley Gooman continue rule

By Jerry Campany on February 9, 2019

The Kamehameha wrestling team has been on quite the run during the 2018-2019 season. After the boys’ and girls’ teams swept the Officials Tournament at Leilehua in December, both came out victorious with team titles at the ILH championships on Saturday afternoon on its home floor. To Kamehameha coach Rob Hesia, that type of success is attainable when a team is as motivated as it is talented. “We know the kids have been working hard in the wrestling room. They […]

Kapaa pulls through for third D-II state title

By Nick Abramo on February 9, 2019

Kapaa is a real player in Division II soccer. The Warriors beat Saint Louis 1-0 on Saturady night, breaking through for their third title in The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer Championships. That’s number three for Kapaa (12-1-1), which also won it all in 2009 and ’13. Only Mid-Pacific, with four, has more. The run for the Neighbor Islands also continued for the fourth year in a row. Kamehameha-Hawaii captured the title a year ago with a victory in the […]
