By Nick Abramo on March 6, 2019

Leo Sing Chow is giving back at her alma mater and that smile on her face is hard to miss. The 2002 All-State player of the year by both the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and Honolulu Star-Advertiser is coaching Kamehameha’s varsity team for the first time this season and loving it. After going on to play at UH Hilo, Sing Chow spent the last three seasons coaching Kamehameha’s JV team. “This is a different level,” said Sing Chow, whose uncle Ty Sing […]

No. 3 Maryknoll’s hitters find a major groove

By Nick Abramo on March 6, 2019

No. 3 Maryknoll’s batters have found a big-time groove. Coach John Uekawa‘s softball squad launched two grand slams and put the hurt on No. 7 Kamehameha 16-9 on Wednesday at the Warriors’ home field. Catcher Liliana Thomas and right fielder Kaylah Santos went long with the sacks full, and the Spartans (3-0) also got a complete-game performance from Aloha Akaka, who earned the win despite giving up three round-trippers to the Warriors. “We’e been very, very fortunate with the bats, […]

UPDATE: Five ongoing lawsuits involving Hawaii high school athletics

By Nick Abramo on March 6, 2019

There are currently at least five lawsuits in the courts that have to do with Hawaii high school sports. Here are updates on each of them: KAISER >> A Kaiser football player’s parent, Gregory Tartamella, is going to court as the defendant in a jury trial. The charges are assault, terroristic threatening and harassment of now ex-football coach Arnold Martinez. The case stems partly from an incident in fall 2017 in which Tartamella was caught on video yelling at Martinez. […]

Landon Carter’s 3-hitter sparks No. 4 Punahou over Damien, 3-0

By Paul Honda on March 5, 2019

Keenan Sue says the Punahou Buffanblu don’t see a lot of off-speed pitches on a daily basis, not like before. In years past, there were some pitchers who relied heavily on finesse. The staff has a lot of fireballers now, and when it came time to face Damien’s crafty River Iaea, timing was often not there. Punahou got enough offense, despite a 1-for-13 combined hitting performance from batters one through four, to eke out a 3-0 win over gritty Damien […]

Believe it — esports is here

By Brian McInnis on March 5, 2019

In the event that you have not opened up Tuesday’s print edition of the Star-Advertiser (or thumbed through the online edition), or stumbled upon last week’s first notice on Hawaii Prep World, let this be your digital reckoning. Esports has arrived in Hawaii high schools. Or, in some cases, it will very soon. Schools across the state are into their second week of competition as of today. But many of the players are still awaiting their first actual competition of […]

Timing is good for Farrington’s move up to D-I baseball

By Nick Abramo on March 4, 2019

Farrington baseball coach Eric Tokunaga isn’t promising the moon as his Governors move up from Division II to D-I this year. But, the timing is pretty good, he said. “We’ve got an influx of younger players,” Tokunaga said during a phone interview Friday. “We had freshmen playing varsity last year in D-II, so the transition will be easier. This year, those players are physically stronger.” Being competitive is what he’s striving for. “We’ll try to hold our own and stay […]

Aiea softball team moves up to Division I, reluctantly

By Nick Abramo on March 4, 2019

Aiea is up to Division I from D-II in softball this year. It’s not the exact place coach Alan Higuchi and his Na Alii want to be, but they’re going to do the best they can. “If it was by choice, I would choose Division II,” Higuchi said via cell phone on Friday. “Our school enrollment is dropping. Whereas in the past we would have 1,200 students, it’s down to 980. It’s hard to compete with schools that have three […]
