Kameron Ng caps storied career with MVP award at Classic

By Paul Honda on March 10, 2019

Senior exhibitions, all-star games, showcases — they are unpredictable. One year, almost nobody played defense in the ILH-OIA boys game at the Geremy Robinson Senior Classic. But more often, neither side is content to go through the motions. Tonight, the ILH prevailed in a thriller, 88-87, over the OIA that showcased the best of the private-school league and the best of the public schools. The ILH saw a 10-point lead dissipate on Saturday night as the OIA got a huge […]

Kalena Gibson caps comeback at Senior Classic

By Paul Honda on March 9, 2019

If there were a comeback player of the year award in prep basketball, Kalena Gibson would be a worthy candidate. Gibson scored 13 points, including nine in the second half to help spark a massive 36-16 run for the OIA squad against the ILH. The ILH rallied in the final few minutes for a 95-90 win in the Geremy Robinson Senior Classic, but Gibson wrapped up her prep career with immense courage. The Mililani senior tore her ACL late in […]

Prep baseball roundup: Kaiser’s offense on fire early

By Billy Hull on March 9, 2019

A four-run deficit in the first inning wasn’t going to slow down the Kaiser baseball team. The Cougars scored in every inning and plated at least three runs in all but one frame in a 17-7 mauling of OIA East rival Kalani in six innings on Saturday at Kaiser’s home field. Christian Reasoner tripled twice and was one of two Kaiser players to drive in four runs as the Cougars moved to 2-0 in league play following Thursday’s win over […]

Liana Heshiki’s 4-for-4 day highlights Punahou’s victory

By Nick Abramo on March 7, 2019

Liana Heshiki did what cleanup hitters are supposed to do, going 4-for-4 on Thursday to lead No. 6 Punahou to a 9-3 win over ‘Iolani in an ILH softball game at Ala Wai Community Park. In the No. 4 spot, Heshiki is proving to be right fit as a batting-order companion to the Buffanblu’s D’Asha Saiki, who is at No. 3 in the order. “I love her swing right now,” Eldredge said about Heshiki. “She’s swinging it really well and […]

‘Iolani coach Benny Agbayani recalls MLB high point

By Nick Abramo on March 7, 2019

‘Iolani softball coach Benny Agbayani and his staff spoke to the Raiders for about 20 minutes after their 9-3 loss to Punahou on Thursday. Surely, Agbayani had a lot of insights to share with them after a stinging first defeat in the ILH season. After starring in baseball at Saint Louis and Hawaii Pacific, he played from 1998 to 2002 in the major leagues with the New York Mets, Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox. After the girls were dismissed […]

‘Iolani freshman Lexie Tilton impressive in debut

By Nick Abramo on March 7, 2019

No. 4 wasn’t even on the roster, but she made a major impact in her first varsity game. ‘Iolani freshman Lexie Tilton, who was just brought up from the intermediate team, went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run in her debut. Too bad for Tilton that it came in a losing cause. The Raiders, ranked No. 8 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10, were beaten by rival and sixth-ranked Punahou 9-3 on Thursday at Ala Wai Community Park. Tilton, in […]

Micah Yonamine’s 2 HRs, 7 RBIs power ‘Iolani over Saint Louis, 14-7

By Paul Honda on March 7, 2019

Time has a way of rewarding those with work ethic. Micah Yonamine and his ‘Iolani teammates would know. The Raiders have been on a hitting tear since day one of preseason, and it continued in ILH regular-season play this week. No. 2 ‘Iolani outscored St. Francis 11-5 on Tuesday, and this afternoon, the Raiders rallied with a six-run fifth inning to outlast No. 7 Saint Louis 14-7 at rainy, sunny, gusty and sometimes still Goeas Field. ‘Iolani’s 2-0 start in […]
