Jack Deuchar’s 13 kills lead Punahou over Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on March 14, 2019

On paper, the dynasty that is Punahou boys volleyball should be in speed-bump mode. With a young roster including three freshmen and three sophomores, Punahou hasn’t missed a beat. Junior Jack Deuchar had 13 kills while hitting .423 and Christian Hong added seven as the visiting Buffanblu outlasted Kamehameha 25-19, 25-21 on Thursday night at humid Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. The visitors looked young at times, committing nine service errors in the first set and five more in the second. Their defense, […]

Hoopbook: Vacancies at ‘Iolani, Saint Louis, Castle

By Paul Honda on March 14, 2019

Coaching changes happen often enough, and they go unnoticed at times. The boys basketball season has been over in Hawaii for less than three weeks, but the changes coming could have a domino effect with more impact than usual. It began with news that Sol Batoon had been released after two seasons as Saint Louis coach. That was relatively sudden, given that the middle-school and elementary-school level teams have been more active than usual under Batoon’s watch. Playing in youth […]

Five additions give Hawaii 17 nationally ranked girls wrestlers

By Billy Hull on March 14, 2019

The fourth set of national rankings in girls wrestling by USA Wrestling, FloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum for the 2018-19 season were published on Thursday with five new wrestlers from Hawaii listed. A total of 17 overall made the rankings of top 20 girls high school wrestlers in each individual weight class. Campbell’s Jazmyn Enriques, who won her first state title at 97 pounds last month, entered the rankings at No. 19 at 100 pounds. […]

Moanalua boys volleyball: the Great OIA Hope

By Nick Abramo on March 14, 2019

ILH dominance has been unreal in state boys volleyball. You have to go back 40 years to the Robin Goo-coached Roosevelt Rough Riders in 1979 to find an OIA team that turned out to be the best in the state. Eighty-eight percent of the time (44 of 50 years), a private school has won the top-level championship. One school, Punahou, has 36 of those titles, and that’s a 72-percent clip. What can the underdog public-school teams do? Keep plugging away […]

Punahou avoids crucial mistakes to stay undefeated in ILH

By Nick Abramo on March 12, 2019

Punahou coach Keenan Sue felt fortunate to be on the correct end of a 5-3 ILH baseball victory over Saint Louis on Tuesday at Goeas Field. It’s an awfully tough gig to be in the ILH, where talent and competition abounds each and every year. The Buffanblu (3-0) got it done with a four-run fifth inning to snatch the victory away from the Crusaders (2-2), who had taken a 3-1 lead. It allowed Punahou to remain one of only two […]

Shane Sasaki’s 2-homer day sparks ‘Iolani over Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on March 12, 2019

Another game, another 15 base hits for the ‘Iolani hit squad. The Raiders made it another juggernaut afternoon, getting a 4-for-4, two-home run effort from center fielder Shane Sasaki en route to a 12-6 win over No. 10 Kamehameha on Tuesday at ‘Iolani field. ‘Iolani is now 4-0 in ILH play, leading Punahou (3-0) and the rest of the pack. Kamehameha’s six runs on nine hits is more than respectable. The Raiders just didn’t make any mental errors. And boy, […]

By Billy Hull on March 12, 2019

UCLA junior Austin Matautia was taken off the court on a stretcher on Saturday and will miss the rest of the season with a “season-ending ankle injury,” the school confirmed Tuesday. Matautia, a 2016 Moanalua alumnus who transferred after playing two seasons at Hawaii, suffered the injury in the third set of a sweep of Penn State. Damn shame for @AustinMatautia – get well soon! pic.twitter.com/x2aF3RUuKB — MPSF Bias (@MPSF_Bias) March 10, 2019 The 6-foot-4 outside hitter had started all […]

BIIF to avoid mismatches, but D-II Konawaena in tight spot

By Paul Honda on March 12, 2019

Changes are coming to the Big Island football hierarchy whether smaller schools like Konawaena like it or not. It is a classic trickle-down, or trickle-up, scenario. And the dominoes are falling. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported today that the Big Island Interscholastic Federation will avoid mismatches between Division I dynasty Hilo and recent eight-man football convert Kohala by using a divisional scheduling format. But the chain-reaction result is that D-II powerhouse Konawaena, and D-II Honokaa, are likely to move up to […]
