By Paul Honda on March 19, 2019

A roster that includes some of Hawaii’s top basketball players, including former professional Derrick Low, also has a bit of Saintly thumbprints. Brothers Kameron and Kordel Ng are on the roster of the Kingdom of Hawaii team and are set to fly to New Zealand for a Pacific Rim-wide tournament on Thursday. Kameron Ng, a senior, and Kordel, a junior, are the only Hawaii prep players on the roster. “We’re going to play against other national teams, Poly national teams. […]

Q&A: ‘Iolani outfielder Shane Sasaki

By Paul Honda on March 19, 2019

‘Iolani’s hit machine is a phenomenon, a result of reps and development. The process has been simple and certainly not easy. Shane Sasaki and his teammates haven’t stopped since reaching the state semifinals in 2018. Swings in the batting cage. Reps in the weight room. No rest for the weary. Sasaki is batting .591 with three homers, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored during ‘Iolani’s 6-0 run to start the ILH season. Last year, he was a Star-Advertiser All-State second-team […]

Defending OIA champ Mililani makes biggest jump

By Paul Honda on March 18, 2019

For a third week in a row, Baldwin occupies the No. 1 ranking in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. Again, however, Baldwin (11-1, 3-0 MIL) saw its hold on first-place votes has diminished slightly. The defending state champions collected eight first-place votes, while ILH front-runner ‘Iolani (16-3, 6-0) received the other two. Waiakea (9-1, 4-0 BIIF) leaped a notch over Punahou (13-1-1, 5-0 ILH) to No. 3. Punahou and ‘Iolani will play on Thursday in a key ILH showdown at […]

Campbell widens its lead for No. 1; Waianae, MPI jump up

By Nick Abramo on March 18, 2019

Mid-Pacific and Waianae moved up in a big way this week in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser softball Top 10. The Owls (5-1 ILH) jumped three spots to No. 4 and the Seariders (4-1 OIA West) climbed the same amount of slots to No. 5. A surprise team so far this season, Waianae knocked off then-No. 5 Mililani 4-0 on Tuesday. Campbell (5-0 OIA West) and Maryknoll (5-1 ILH) stayed put at Nos. 1 and 2. The Sabers were fortunate to rally […]

By Nick Abramo on March 18, 2019

Club football is about to become available to college students across Hawaii via a program called Hawaii 8. The plan, which is being put forth by the nonprofit Hawaii Football Club, is to put five teams on the field for competition next spring and beyond. The hope is for the five-team conference to eventually become eight, according to HFC executive director Keala Pule. Some big names from Hawaii high school football — former Kahuku coach Reggie Torres and former Waianae […]

Kalina Obrey enters pantheon of epic girls hoopsters

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2019

A year ago, Kalina Obrey wasn’t sure where she belonged. Oh, she was perfectly situated at Kamehameha as the Warriors’ go-to post scorer and defender. But not many colleges wanted a 5-foot-10 post, not at the Division I level. Obrey was already ahead of the game. She went to work intensively, every day, on her perimeter skills with 808 Basketball coaches Bob Keanini and Hinano Higa in the offseason. A few teams, like Hawaii, were interested in her as a […]

Jayda Favela lights Campbell’s fuse in comeback win over Leilehua

By Nick Abramo on March 16, 2019

Those judging a softball player’s worth by on home runs and RBIs may miss the value in a player like Campbell’s Jayda Favela. She is a Jayda of all trades. A solid second baseman, she quietly fueled the top-ranked Sabers’ 7-6 comeback victory at home over No. 10 Leilehua on Saturday morning. This is what the kid sister of former Campbell standouts Elisa and Trinity Favela did: >> Reached base four times >> Went 2-for-3 by beating out two infield […]

Jake Tsukada’s 5 RBIs keep Punahou undefeated in ILH

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2019

The chase for the one and only automatic state-tourney berth in the regular season for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu is turning into a two-team race. Just don’t say it to the Punahou Buffanblu and ‘Iolani Raiders. Neither team is willing to call it that, even though they are the only unbeaten teams in the chase. Punahou kept it close on Saturday with a 14-2 rout of Kamehameha at sizzling-hot Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. Punahou is now […]
