St. Francis can’t hold off Punahou comeback

By Nick Abramo on March 21, 2019

Big leads don’t always mean much in high school softball on Oahu this year. St. Francis went up by six runs and appeared to be cruising on Wednesday at Punahou. In the early going, the home team Buffanblu were struggling big-time at the plate. As soon as the second inning ended and after his girls had popped or flied out for five of the first six outs, Punahou coach Boy Eldredge exclaimed, “No more fly balls.” The Buffanblu took his […]

Konawaena to take football home-and-home test with Mission Viejo

By Nick Abramo on March 20, 2019

Konawaena football coach Brad Uemoto isn’t backing down from the big boys. Uemoto scheduled his Wildcats to play a home-and-home against Mission Viejo of California this fall on the Big Island and then in 2020 in California. Against a supremely difficult schedule, the Diablos went 6-6 in 2018, but still finished No. 26 in the MaxPreps national computer rankings. One of the losses was by forfeit to Villa Park (after a 28-13 win on the field) and the other was […]

Freshmen Ailana Agbayani, Allie Capello spark ‘Iolani rally

By Paul Honda on March 19, 2019

There’s a reason why fences exist. When they don’t, confusion can arise. No. 2 Maryknoll led 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning of a key showdown with No. 6 ‘Iolani on Tuesday at Ala Wai Park. The Raiders took the lead, 2-1, and had two runners on base when freshman Allie Capello stepped into the box. After taking a strike on the inside corner, Capello waited and saw the same pitch in the same location. She lined the […]

Roosevelt’s walk-off homer upstages Kaiser’s incredible catch

By Nick Abramo on March 19, 2019

Athletically speaking, Lauryn Wee‘s catch was the play of the game Tuesday at the Lincoln Elementary School softball field. It came in a losing cause, however. On the scoreboard, Kanilehua Pitoy‘s inside-the-park, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh that gave Roosevelt a 2-1 victory over Kaiser gets the nod as the play of the game. Things were still scoreless in the third inning when the third-ranked Rough Riders’ Maya Nakamura hit a deep drive that looked to be […]

The Cal State Bakersfield junior hurled a shutout against Hawaii on Sunday in a 2-0 win for the Roadrunners. Barclay took a perfect game into the sixth inning and finished with 10 strikeouts while surrendering just one hit and a walk. “It felt good to be at home. Our team had a chance to […]

Brandon Kauhi out as Waiakea girls basketball coach after winning BIIF

By Paul Honda on March 19, 2019

Brandon Kauhi is no longer the girls basketball head coach at Waiakea. Kauhi declined to comment about the school’s decision to release him. He led the Warriors to their first Big Island Interscholastic Federation title since 2008, beating Konawaena once during the regular season — ending the Wildcats’ 124-game win streak in league play — and again in the tournament final. The Warriors reached the state tournament and lost to Kalani in the state quarterfinal round. They finished at No. […]
