Jake Tsukada’s walk-off homer keeps Punahou atop ILH baseball standings

By Paul Honda on March 28, 2019

All things considered in a heated, epic battle between two historical rivals, Keenan Sue did the right thing. Not that he would agree fully. Punahou’s 10-inning, 5-4 victory over ‘Iolani put the Buffanblu in the driver’s seat of the ILH baseball chase. But it was a wild 10th inning that was both dramatic and clutch. First, the top of the 10th. Tate Shimao of ‘Iolani at second base. Two outs. Taner Aranaydo swings at a 1-0 pitch from Matt McConnell. […]

Hawaii’s best in track and field so far in 2019

By Nick Abramo on March 28, 2019

Baldwin’s Rey Cadiz and Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Chenoa Frederick will be chasing their own records at the Island Movers/HHSAA Track and Field State Championships in early May. And both have the top marks among Hawaii athletes in two individual events thus far in the 2019 season, according to athletic.net. Cadiz, who holds the 110-meter hurdles state-meet record of 14.20 seconds, has the season’s best in the 110 (14.30) and 300 hurdles (39.49). He’s going for a third title in the 110 and […]

Sophomore Tiani Wayton’s HR lifts Punahou over MPI

By Paul Honda on March 27, 2019

Sometimes, perfection is not everything, and imperfection is overrated. Mid-Pacific slugger Lea Hanawahine went 4-for-4 with a home run the last time the Owls met Punahou. MPI won that contest 15-12 back on Feb. 27, the last time Punahou lost in ILH play. Hanawahine went 3-for-3 against Punahou on Wednesday, but this time the Buffanblu prevailed. No. 7 Punahou turned the tables as Ashanti Martinez kept her pitches down in the zone. The visiting Owls didn’t get one ball over […]

Kailua freshman Mikey Hanano hits walk-off homer to beat Kaiser

By Nick Abramo on March 27, 2019

More than likely, Mikey Hanano is going to be a special ballplayer for the Kailua Surfriders. And it’s not just because the freshman hit a seventh-inning, pinch-hit, walk-off home run to give Kailua and pitcher Bryson Ewaliko a 2-1 victory over Kaiser on Wednesday. Here are two more reasons: >> Talking about the winning hit put tears into the eyes of Surfriders coach Corey Ishigo. >> Hanano is a long-time friend of and patterns his baseball attitude on former Kailua […]

Two more homers make it 8 for ‘Iolani’s Micah Yonamine

By Paul Honda on March 27, 2019

At 6 feet, 3 inches, Micah Yonamine was quite the sight two years ago as a sophomore catcher for the ‘Iolani Raiders. Skills, yes. But unusual, for sure. In the islands, most baseball players of this height wind up at first base if they’re not pitching. Or in the outfield, a la Herman Medeiros of Hilo back in the 1990s. “We’re not going to pigeonhole guys,” Raiders coach Kurt Miyahira said. Like Medeiros, Yonamine was a lanky athlete with uncanny […]

St. Francis turns its attention to making a run in D-II

By Billy Hull on March 27, 2019

Nothing that transpired in No. 10 St. Francis’ 4-1 loss to No. 3 Punahou on Tuesday at Goeas Field changed the way Saints coach Kip Akana views his team. The Saints played error-free baseball against the Buffanblu and hung tight despite hitting 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position. They scratched across a run in the seventh inning with aggressive baserunning. Pinch runner Dean Foster stole third base, despite a four-run deficit, forcing a throw from the catcher to get away […]

HG: CSU Bakersfield teammates make life easier for each other

By Christian Shimabuku on March 27, 2019

Cal State Bakersfield’s Chris Hipa and Cydney Curran are used to facing each other on the big stage. For two straight years during their prep softball days in Hawaii, Curran and Campbell got the best of Hipa’s higher-seeded Kamehameha teams at the HHSAA state championships. The Sabers beat the top-seeded Warriors 5-0 in the quarterfinals in 2014. Then in 2015, Campbell won 7-1 in the semifinals before it went on to win first of three consecutive HHSAA titles. When it […]

ZB Kon’s first varsity win helps Mid-Pacific stun No. 2 ‘Iolani again

By Paul Honda on March 26, 2019

After more than three hours, an epic battle between David and Goliath was headed for Tieville. For Mid-Pacific, though, clutch pitching by sophomore Zarek “ZB” Kon and a game-winning infield single off the bat of Kodey Shojinaga were enough to lift the Owls to another stunning 7-6 win over No. 2 ‘Iolani under a darkening sky over Francis Williams Damon Field on Tuesday. The win is Mid-Pacific’s second in a row over previously unbeaten ‘Iolani in four days. At ‘Iolani […]
