Lanai baseball prospect Naighel Calderon hits 4 homers in a game

By Paul Honda on March 31, 2019

There is a bit of a forest behind the outfield fence at Lanai’s baseball field. Pine trees, of course, for the island’s only high school baseball team, the Pine Lads. That’s not the only big lumber in the vicinity. Naighel Calderon boomed four home runs on Saturday, going 4-for-4 with six RBIs as Lanai defeated visiting St. Anthony 10-1. Lanai swept the Trojans over the weekend. On Friday, the Pine Lads won 10-1 in six innings as Calderon — who […]

‘Iolani softball gets past Mid-Pacific with small ball

By Nick Abramo on March 30, 2019

‘Iolani has a little bit of everything on the softball field. They can hit, pitch, hit for power, and play defense. But, more importantly, while they’re doing those things well, they’re also running the bases aggressively. And they bunt. Classic small ball. “Everybody in the lineup has to know how to bunt,” said Raiders coach Benny Agbayani, who played in Japan and may have gotten some of that small-ball wisdom by osmosis. “Every one of them might have to bunt […]

Castle’s Mele Turner does it all for the Knights softball team

By Nick Abramo on March 30, 2019

Mele Turner was a one-woman annihilator for the Castle Knights on Saturday evening. With a calm and clear pre-sundown Honolulu skyline in the background at the McKinley field, Turner pitched and hit her team to an 11-1, mercy-rule shortened, six-inning OIA East softball victory over Moanalua. Turner set the tone fast and never let up. On the first pitch of the game from Na Menehune’s Jada Young, the senior made a solid connection and sent the flourescent green-yellow ball deep […]

Q&A: Kaimuki coach David Tautofi on the state of Bulldogs football

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2019

Here, in view of Diamond Crater, is some breathing room for the Kaimuki Bulldogs.
Playing with as few as 23 players in the 2018 season, Kaimuki managed to qualify for the state football tournament. The Bulldogs won at Kamehameha-Hawaii, then lost in a close battle against Kapaa at Vidinha Stadium in Lihue. Their All-State two-way lineman, Sama Paama, suffered a knee injury on Kaimuki’s final offensive play.
Had Kaimuki won that Division II semifinal, there would’ve been a title […]

No. 6 Campbell starting to round into championship form

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2019

Glenn Flores is hoping for more. Ayzek Silva struck out six Mules and allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings as No. 6 Campbell rolled to a five-inning, 13-0 win over Leilehua on Saturday at Wahiawa Middle School field. Kaimana Savaiinaea pitched a scoreless fifth inning, striking out two. It was the Saber bats that came alive with runners on base, leaving their coach smiling. “We got hits with two outs today. Recently, that’s been our downfall,” Flores said. […]

Leilehua’s Kiana Domingo hits two homers in win over No. 2 Waianae

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2019

The first time Leilehua and Waianae met during the regular season, the host Seariders rallied for a key 6-4 win. This time, in their second meeting during OIA West play, they stuck with a similar blueprint. It was not, however, exactly the same, and No. 10 Leilehua won its fourth game in a row, blasting four home runs in an 8-1 victory on Saturday morning at sunny Kaala Elementary School field. Leilehua is now 6-3 in the OIA West, still […]

Kaiser’s Curtis Chung Jr. goes the distance to beat Moanalua

By Kyle Sakamoto on March 30, 2019

Kaiser’s Curtis Chung Jr. was a model of efficiency on the mound Saturday against Moanalua, and he got a big-time defensive play from center fielder Jesse Stroede along the way to go the distance in a 4-1 victory in an OIA East baseball game at the Cougars’ field. Chung Jr. threw just 82 pitches in a five-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts. A senior right-hander, Chung Jr. threw 61 total strikes, including first-pitch strikes to 20 of the 25 […]

Kaimuki to stay D-II in football while Nanakuli will move down

By Nick Abramo on March 29, 2019

Nanakuli is moving down from OIA-ILH Division I to D-II for football, league football coordinator Harold Tanaka said Thursday. There were reports of Kaimuki moving up from D-II to D-I, but that is not the case, Tanaka confirmed. Last year, there were 10 teams in both the OIA-ILH D-I and D-II. For 2019, Nanakuli, in effect, is replacing St. Francis in the lowest tier. St. Francis, an ILH school, is closing its doors at the end of this school year. […]
