Her time in the trials of the 300-meter hurdles was 47.44 seconds, good enough to qualify for the finals. It was the best time of her career, which began just one year ago. She had posted a 49.75 at Kamehameha on Mar. 9, a 50.00 at the […]

Uluave added two inches to her personal best and won the shot put at the Punahou Relays on Saturday with a throw of 38 feet, 7 inches. “I was focused on getting that PR,” Uluave said. “You practice and practice, but it’s not the same adrenaline rush as the meet. By Kyle Sakamoto on April 13, 2019

The Punahou boys volleyball team received a “wake-up call” the last time it played Kamehameha. This time around, the Buffanblu answered the call. The Buffanblu (10-1) clinched a berth in the HHSAA Division I State Championships, which starts April 29. Punahou has won the last seven state titles. “Huge. I cannot tell […]

D-II St. Francis forces Punahou into ILH D-I softball tiebreaker

By Christian Shimabuku on April 13, 2019

St. Francis coach Randy Langsi says his team plays every game like it’s their last. With the school set to close at the end of May, maybe that line of thinking is warranted. But against No. 2 Punahou, the No. 9 Saints were up against the ILH’s elite. A petition for St. Francis to move up from Division II to Division I in ILH and state competition was denied twice on March 22, and Friday’s game at Ala Wai Park […]

‘Heartfelt’ team meeting sparks Punahou in upset win over Corona Del Mar

By Paul Honda on April 12, 2019

From afar, it did not seem like the Punahou Buffanblu were in need of a transformative moment. On Friday night, the seven-time defending state champions showed what they are made of with a stunning 25-22, 25-16, 31-29 sweep of nationally-ranked Corona Del Mar (Calif.) on the last day of the Clash of the Titans. “It was their senior night, so that’s to be expected, just like we would of our team,” Corona Del Mar coach Sam Stafford said. Jack Deuchar […]

Kamehameha opts for some rest before huge match vs. Punahou

By Paul Honda on April 12, 2019

There are very few weeks like this for any volleyball team. Kamehameha opted to take the path with the highest chance of capturing a state-tournament berth. When the Warriors (9-1) meet Punahou (9-1) for the ILH regular-season title on Saturday, they will be a bit more rested. Kamehameha edged Punahou on Tuesday to force a first-place tiebreaker. Then came the Clash of the Titans tourney with matches every night, including Friday’s 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 loss to nationally-ranked Huntington Beach (Calif.). […]

By Nick Abramo on April 12, 2019

Alakai Aglipay built a name for himself at a very young age as one of the players on the Little League World Series championship team from Ewa Beach in 2005. He has continued to contribute to Hawaii’s baseball community and now he has the chance to make his mark as a high school baseball head coach. Last week, Aglipay was promoted from an assistant to Maryknoll’s head coach to replace Eric Kadooka, who unexpectedly stepped down. The Spartans were 4-9 […]
