State champion Moanalua thrived on constant challenges

By Paul Honda on December 19, 2021

Kaycee Kealoha knows busy. The Moanalua cheer coach also thrives in chaos. Every week, a new challenge — not just from opposing teams.
Moanalua’s second Large Division state crown under Kealoha was precise, sharp, impressive. Sixteen Na Menehune in unison at the Billy Tees/HHSAA Cheerleading State Championships on Saturday at Blaisdell Arena. The winning routine — which led to 359.75 points — wasn’t a season-long simmer. “Every year, every single competition, we change our routine. This one is a brand […]

Return to excellence: Radford’s Ultra 7 captures state title

By Paul Honda on December 19, 2021

The longest competitive cheer season was perfectly imperfect for Radford. The Rams wrapped up with the state championship in the Medium Division on Saturday at Blaisdell Arena, not long after capturing the OIA title outright, regardless of division. For coach Bo Frank, 359 points wasn’t pleasant, but it was enough. “It’s been a very long season, actually our lowest score of the year, but we still pulled it out,” Frank said. The title gave Frank plenty to be happy about. […]

By Hawaii Prep World on December 19, 2021

In a game where each team looked to be the better one at various points, it was Saint Louis who would come out the victors. The Crusaders’ 27-25 victory over Mililani in the Open Division semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships will send them back to a fifth straight title game, having won the last four. “Just super excited,” Saint Louis quarterback AJ Bianco said after the game. “We’ve been waiting two years for this. I couldn’t […]

Despite loss to Sierra Canyon, a special night for Punahou’s Peyton Macapulay

By Paul Honda on December 18, 2021

At 5 feet, 9 inches, Peyton Macapulay has always defied the odds on a basketball court. The guy is, always was, always will be a blur. Sierra Canyon left the premises with a 65-39 win over Hawaii powerhouse Punahou on Saturday night, but fans on both sides of the gym, whether from Punahou, Waialua or otherwise, brought their biggest roars for Macapulay’s deft thread-the-needle passes and impeccable reverse layups in transition. For 32 minutes it felt like the ‘Iolani Classic […]

Kahuku’s defense shuts out Campbell to return to state title game

By Kyle Sakamoto on December 18, 2021

The Kahuku Red Raiders were so dominant defensively Saturday they didn’t allow Campbell to even reach the red zone. Kahuku allowed 133 total yards and 2.9 yards per play in a 21-0 victory over Campbell in the Open Division semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships at Farrington’s Skippa Diaz Stadium. “Our defense played very sound, fundamental football tonight,” said Kahuku coach Sterling Carvalho. “That’s what we wanted to do. If anything, it was a bend-but-don’t-break mentality. We […]

Legacy of Lunas: Preparation, execution, exhilaration

By Paul Honda on December 18, 2021

The words are never rambling. If anything, when Bobby Watson speaks, Lunas listen. In the aftermath of a 30-7 semifinal win over a dangerous, previously unbeaten Konawaena squad, unbeaten Lahainaluna (7-0) gathered behind the makai end zone of Skippa Diaz Stadium and took a knee. Watson didn’t yell. He just had that look. That tone. Nobody was safe. As co-head coach Dean Rickard took interviews across the field and Blare Sylva-Viela (100 rushing yards, TD, interception) faced the post-game, on-air […]
