Hawaii Baptist’s Derek Coryell picks up coach of year honor

By Nick Abramo on May 29, 2019

Hawaii Baptist coach Derek Coryell was named Hawaii’s coach of the year for 2018 by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association. Coryell led Hawaii Baptist to the Division II state championship on Oct. 27, 2018, at Central Oahu Regional Park. What made that state title all the more special was that, had the girls race not been broken down into Division I and Division II for team purposes, the Eagles would have secured a victory against the whole […]

A LOOK BACK: Every 2018-19 state championship

By Nick Abramo on May 28, 2019

St. Francis opened its doors to students in 1924 and is now at the end of the line. Next school year, there will be no St. Francis. The school’s athletic program, however, went out as winners. The Saints’ baseball, softball and boys volleyball teams won Division II state championships this spring. In the last state tournament of the 2018-19 season, St. Francis captured the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships in D-II with a 10-4 victory over Waimea at Lihue’s […]

Training and technology: Softball’s sonic boom of long balls

By Paul Honda on May 28, 2019

The numbers tell us something drastic has happened in the world of high school softball, and fans are applauding from end to end on the bleachers. Batting numbers are up. Way up. So are pitching statistics. The trend has been real in the past two years, perhaps three. Compare the last two state softball Division I tournaments. A month ago, teams combined for 13 home runs. On day one. That alone surpassed the long-ball total of 12 for the 2018 […]

Q&A: All-State Softball POY Aleia Agbayani of ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on May 28, 2019

Work is work, and play is play. Somewhere along the line, Aleia Agbayani knew they were one and the same in this game of softball. The senior was a major part of ‘Iolani’s state-championship run this spring. Then came the Star-Advertiser All-State selection as player of the year. A southpaw ace pitcher who bats right-handed — .636 batting average, 16 home runs and 56 RBIs — and also plays center field with nearly no peer. Agbayani has one more exam […]

With 16 HRs, 56 RBIs, Aleia Agbayani leads All-State softball selections

By Paul Honda on May 26, 2019

2019 was the year of the splendid splinter. Or, maybe, the year of the supreme swinger. Up and down the lineups of the state’s better teams, sluggers reached new heights. More so, positions that provided mostly defense and solid singles-oriented offense bashed their way into the spotlight more than ever. Leading the way for the 2019 Star-Advertiser Softball All-State team is pitcher/center fielder Aleia Agbayani of ‘Iolani, the player of the year. The Cal-bound senior crushed what is believed to […]

Hawaii Grown: Jocelyn Alo not focused on anyone’s expectations but her own

By Christian Shimabuku on May 22, 2019

Perhaps the only downside of the sensational freshman year Jocelyn Alo had at Oklahoma was how remarkably high it set the bar for year two. Last season, Alo led the nation with 30 home runs while hitting .420 and a team-high 72 RBI, and was awarded with National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honors. She was also named Freshman of the Year by both the NFCA and Big 12 Conference. Fans across the country eagerly wondered what she would do for an […]
