Campbell shows off big-play capability in tri-scrimmage

By Paul Honda on July 25, 2019

There could have been some rough going for the Campbell Sabers in chapter one of their 2019 football season. Instead, the Sabers excelled precisely where questions about inexperience were looming. Sophomore quarterback Blaine Hipa rifled three touchdown passes and the young offensive line did not allow a sack during a tri-scrimmage with Damien and Kaimuki on Thursday night in Ewa Beach. It was an especially memorable night for first-year Sabers offensive coordinator Jaymason Lee. He got his first taste of […]

Reigning national champion Kosei Gakuen gets a taste of prep football in Hawaii

By Nick Abramo on July 25, 2019

Midway through a football tri-scrimmage at Skippa Diaz Stadium at Farrington on Thursday, a brilliant rainbow adorned the sky in the East. Coincidence, maybe. But it may also have signaled the arrival of a tight, disciplined, bunch of players from the Far East. They came from Tokyo — Kosei Gakuen High School — and are here to test themselves against Hawaii competition and take part in a cultural exchange. “The first half, the offense didn’t do really good,” Kosei Gakuen […]

One coach interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed more light on them […]

COUNTDOWN: UH commit Kilohana Haasenritter adds another weapon for No. 9 Hilo

By Christian Shimabuku on July 25, 2019

Hilo’s football team is currently on its best run in program history, reaching the last two HHSAA Division I finals after having never done so before 2017. The Vikings prevailed 35-19 over Damien in 2017 before falling to Waipahu 42-22 in 2018. In retrospect, coach Kaeo Drummundo saw a young and inexperienced squad that fateful day last November at Aloha Stadium. As the team turns the page to 2019 with most of its young core back, that inexperience has turned […]

HAWAII GROWN: Utah’s Bradlee Anae back for unfinished business

By Billy Hull on July 24, 2019

After leading the Pac-12 in sacks and earning first-team all-conference honors, Bradlee Anae had a choice to make. The 2016 Kahuku alumnus was eligible for the NFL Draft after his junior season, but felt he had some unfinished business to attend to at Utah. One of two players representing the Utes at Pac-12 Media Day in California on Wednesday, Anae spoke for a Utah team picked to win the conference this year in a vote by media covering the league. […]

COUNTDOWN: Big shoes to fill on offense for No. 10 ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on July 24, 2019

New receivers. New running backs. New offensive linemen. The ‘Iolani Raiders, ranked No. 10 in the preseason Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 and featured in today’s newspaper, which you can read here, have some solid returnees on both sides of the ball. However, “transition” is the word as new faces fill in as first-year starters, particularly on offense. Last year’s team had relied on stellar defense and an offensive attack that ran the ball nearly 50 percent of the time. This […]
