GLORY DAYS: Coach Darrell Poole and the 2019 Kalaheo Mustangs

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2019

24th IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed more light on them […]

Sophomore QB Jayden Maiava returns home to Kaimuki with SEC offers in hand

By Christian Shimabuku on July 27, 2019

Kaimuki coach David Tautofi wanted to challenge his squad during fall camp. The Bulldogs didn’t have to travel very far to find the toughest challenge in the state, going just up the road to face nationally-ranked Saint Louis on Saturday morning for a controlled scrimmage. The matchup was also a chance for Jayden Maiava, the Bulldogs’ highly-touted 6-foot-4 rookie quarterback, to see live action against the feared Crusaders defense. Maiava played his freshman season for Sierra Vista (Nev.), where he […]

COUNTDOWN: Alfred Failauga interested in team trophy more than record for No. 7 Waipahu

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2019

Running backs like Alfred Failauga don’t come around these parts too often. Waipahu’s all-time leading ground gainer is back for his senior season this fall and he’s focused on leading the team to the promised land again. There’s also a major record in front of him that he can take, but he’s not thinking too much about that despite numerous requests to expound on the possibility of his making history. >> CLICK HERE FOR A PHOTO GALLERY FROM A RECENT […]

Kaimuki’s Naomas Asuega-Fualaau, Jayden Maiava highlight Bulldogs scrimmage

By Paul Honda on July 26, 2019

Every year, numbers are low, but the Kaimuki Bulldogs find a way to make success happen. The Bulldogs suited up roughly two dozen players on Thursday, and came away from a tri-scrimmage with Campbell and Damien with plenty of material to work with. There was the good, like an 80-yard touchdown run by returnee Naomas Asuega-Fualaau, and a smooth 1-yard keeper for a TD by quarterback Jayden Maiava. Asuega-Fualaau, who rushed for 970 yards and 14 TDs last season, was […]

New-look Damien Monarchs still tough in the trenches

By Paul Honda on July 26, 2019

There are as many question marks about the 2019 Damien Monarchs as ever, perhaps. The new Monarchs answered the bell for the first scrimmage of the season against Campbell and Kaimuki on Thursday night in impressive fashion. A linebacker took the wheel at quarterback and guided Damien to touchdown drives against the Sabers and Bulldogs. Duke Ho‘ohuli, who starts at inside ‘backer, filled in at QB with starter Jake Holtz on a mainland trip. Ho‘ohuli’s pocket presence was poised and […]

By Christian Shimabuku on July 26, 2019

Lahainaluna’s Joshua Tihada already has a career’s worth of accomplishments during his time playing high school football. Three straight state titles. Thirteen rushing touchdowns in HHSAA tournament games, a state record. Heading into his senior year, Tihada is poised to add to both. But not before some big changes for the Lunas, who open the season ranked No. 8 in the Star-Advertiser preseason poll and were featured in today’s Star-Advertiser, which you can read here.
