Fred Salanoa unbowed by defeat in return as Radford coach

By Brian McInnis on August 10, 2019

Fred Salanoa stepped away from high school football head coaching at the pinnacle of his craft. Radford defeated all comers in the 2015 season, capped with hoisting the HHSAA Division II state championship. But after his 13 years at the helm, the Rams endured some tough times after he stepped away. Their only win over the next two years came via forfeit over Kaiser in 2017. Radford was spunkier in 2018, Lon Passos’ third season, but still managed to go […]

Career-high 342 rushing yards has Waipahu’s Alfred Failauga on verge of history

By Christian Shimabuku on August 10, 2019

Alfred Failauga’s special night could pale in comparison to what’s likely to happen in six days. The 342 rushing yards he produced on 31 carries in a 49-28 win at Castle on Friday were the fifth most in a single game in Oahu history. He also added five touchdowns, which all came in the second half. His performance against the Knights, was nothing short of amazing. In the process, he also leapfrogged Kahuku’s Mark Atuaia and Aofaga Wily and ‘Iolani’s […]

Sky Ogata tops 400 yards passing in new-look Roosevelt offense

By Kyle Sakamoto on August 10, 2019

Logic would tell you, Roosevelt should keep everything the same after winning the OIA Division II title last year. That’s not the case this season as the Rough Riders switched their offense from the split-back veer to the run-and-shoot. If Friday’s 42-6 victory over visiting McKinley is any indication, it appears Roosevelt’s offense is just as potent either way. Sky Ogata, who took every snap in the shotgun, completed 27 of 35 passes for 401 yards and three touchdowns against […]

Kapolei has to show some toughness to beat No. 7 Waianae

By Nick Abramo on August 10, 2019

Kapolei’s finesse won out over Waianae’s ruggedness Friday night in the Hurricanes’ 28-20 win over the seventh-ranked Seariders at Raymond Torii Field. Playing somewhat of a second fiddle, however, were the Seariders’ finesse and the Hurricanes’ ruggedness. Without those secondary factors, it’s possible either team could have slipped up badly. Let’s start with the smooth work of the Hurricanes’ offense. Noa Bailey went 20-for-29 with four touchdowns at quarterback. De’Zhaun Stribling continued to show why he’s one of the best […]

No. 2 Punahou awaits news on QB Hugh Brady’s injury

By Paul Honda on August 9, 2019

Ready isn’t always an easy word to define. Heartbreak most certainly is. When Hugh Brady went down with a knee injury during the second quarter against Farrington, the entire Punahou sideline fell silent. The senior quarterback started the game hot, 8-for-9 for 70 yards, and Punahou was on its way to a third scoring drive at Skippa Diaz Stadium. But there was a broken play on first-and-goal from the Farrington 5. Brady raced out of the pocket to the right […]
