No TV means bigger gate for Aloha Football Classic, but how big?

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2019

The breakdown for Saint Louis and Bishop Gorman, Mililani and Liberty, is unlike most high school athletics in the islands. Saint Louis and Bishop Gorman, two longtime brand names on the national football scene, have plenty to gain when they meet tonight at Aloha Stadium. As part of the Aloha Football Classic, the two nationally-ranked teams are stoked to square off on the synthetic turf of a site that Bishop Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez calls “historic.” That cache of Aloha […]

Q&A: Bishop Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez on Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2019

In 2008, Kenny Sanchez became an assistant coach at Bishop Gorman while brother Tony Sanchez was head coach. The epic run of the Bishop Gorman Gaels was underway, and Kenny Sanchez eventually took the helm after Tony became head coach at UNLV. The Gaels have won a state title in each of of Sanchez’s four seasons as head coach, and it never gets easy. >> READ OUR GAME PREVIEW IN THE HONOLULU STAR-ADVERTISER HERE Bishop Gorman (1-0) scheduled four out-of-state […]

Q&A: Saint Louis coach Cal Lee on national powerhouse Bishop Gorman

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2019

Even legendary coach Cal Lee can’t deny the adrenaline rush of a game like this. When Saint Louis clashes with national powerhouse Bishop Gorman (Nev.) on tonight, fans will get the opportunity long awaited. Last year, there was talk of a postseason game against a national or regional power, but that didn’t materialize. >> READ OUR GAME PREVIEW IN THE HONOLULU […]

Former Kapolei QB Lonenoa Faoa returns for Aloha Football Classic

By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2019

Liberty’s iron schedule has barely begun. The football team from Henderson, Nev., with a pile of Hawaii connections, is 0-1, having lost to Chandler (Ariz.) 31-17 last Friday. That’s one out-of-state opponent. The Patriots — the second-ranked team in Nevada behind Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) — play four more from other states in successive weeks. Next up is Mililani, Hawaii’s No. 2-ranked team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10, on Friday night at John Kauinana Stadium. At the same […]

Liberty hits Hawaii with more focus than ever

By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2019

It’s a real quick trip. The Liberty football team flew in Wednesday and Thursday, will play at Mililani on Friday and then return home to Henderson, Nev., on Sunday night. “Any time you travel as a high school kid, it can be difficult because you have a lot of distractions,” coach Rich Muraco said Thursday at Kapiolani Regional Park during a walk-through. “Getting everybody dialed in and focused can be a little bit of a challenge. But we’ve been doing […]

Aloha Football Classic could unearth next unknown star

By Jerry Campany on August 29, 2019

For all of the big stars playing in Friday’s Aloha Football Classic, it is the lesser-known talents who have the most to gain. When Bishop Gorman and Saint Louis face each other on Friday at Aloha Stadium, recruiters will be more than busy watching big uncommitted stars like Jayden de Laura and Darrell Masaniai, it is the under-the-radar players who will be looking to steal the show. Mililani also hosts Liberty of Nevada on Friday, putting two elite ‘Hawaii vs. […]

Saint Louis safety Kamo’i Latu is the fourth defensive starter on the No. 1-ranked Saint Louis Crusaders football team to be named a 2020 Polynesian Bowl All-Star.
