Hoopbook: Stunning indeed — 3 of 4 OIA semifinalists hail from West

By Paul Honda on February 4, 2022

This is how the West, and possibly the OIA, was won. There have always been good players and teams in OIA West girls basketball. But it has been some time since three of the OIA’s four Division I semifinalists came from the West side, where softball and soccer has ruled girls’ athletic success in team sports for years. On Thursday, West 1 Campbell dispatched East 4 Kahuku, 54-27, West 2 Mililani ousted East 3 Moanalua, 37-32, and West 3 Radford […]

Basketball coaches, players clamor for shot clock

By Paul Honda on February 3, 2022

It’s no different for most boys basketball coaches and players in Hawaii. In Tuesday’s edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, girls basketball coaches chimed in with their thoughts about the shot clock, which has been approved nationally by the NFHS (National Federation of High Schools) for use in the 2022-23 season. Eight states have already implemented the shot clock over the years, including the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation). A few years back, only three states were using it. The number will […]

By Paul Honda on February 2, 2022

The options were plenty enough for Blazen Lono-Wong. The 6-foot-5, 242-pound Kailua defensive end opted for Arizona State, signing with the Sun Devils during a ceremony at Kailua High School on Wednesday morning. He is one of a handful of local prospects signing with FBS football programs today. A large majority of football players signed their national letters of intent on the early signing day in December. Lono-Wong turned down offers from Hawaii and Boise State. “I really enjoy the […]

Campbell sophomore Kela Moore on first offer: SDSU

By Paul Honda on February 1, 2022

There are sophomores diving into the learning curve, taking their lumps and just trying to survive through the varsity football struggle. Kela Moore is not one of those sophs. The 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore is already one of the top defensive backs in the state. San Diego State got a jump on prospective competitors by offering the Campbell defender a scholarship last week. “I kind of didn’t really expect it either. But after school, coach DJ (Darren Johnson) would have me […]

Roosevelt lands in Top 10 with Kahuku showdown looming

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2022

Sometimes, close isn’t enough, but close contact — and ensuing protocols — are enough to affect a basketball team. Saint Louis collected nine out of 10 first-place votes to remain atop the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 on Monday. The Crusaders are 7-1 in the ILH gauntlet, where the teams that have stayed healthiest during the regular season are reaping the most rewards. Punahou received one first-place vote. Maryknoll, Punahou, ‘Iolani and Kamehameha round out the top five, all ILH […]

Lunas, Hilo, Maryknoll surge in Girls Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2022

While ‘Iolani and Konawaena have been locked at the top two spots, the midsection of the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 has turned dynamic. Old-school powerhouse Lahainaluna vaulted three notches higher to No. 3 after knocking off the MIL’s first-place team, Maui, 43-41, at the Sabers’ gym. Maui remained at No. 4 despite the loss, and only 10 points separate the Sabers and No. 7 Kamehameha. Hilo moved up two slots to No. 5 after a 49-42 win over rival […]

Crunched time: Earlier dates for boys hoops state tourney affects league playoffs

By Paul Honda on January 30, 2022

If the boys basketball schedule seems crammed and rushed in the coming weeks, there’s one simple reason. The state tournament, originally set for Feb. 28-Mar. 5, has been moved up a week earlier. The Heide & Cook/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships are now scheduled for Feb. 21-26. The sites remain intact: Moanalua and McKinley in Division I, Kalani and Kaimuki in D-II, and Blaisdell Arena on championship finals night. The HHSAA made the announcement to leagues earlier this week, citing […]

By Paul Honda on January 28, 2022

The call him a beast in the weight room. Trech Kekahuna considers it his second home. At 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, the Saint Louis slotback benches 315 pounds and squats 465. He doesn’t his vertical leap, but he can dunk a basketball. Kekahuna, who also runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, is stoked about his latest scholarship offer — from Nevada. Former Saint Louis standout Anthony Arceneaux is an assistant coach there. So is Nate Costa, who coached Marcus […]
